Manfroto makes an L bracket that sells for about $100.00 depending on where you buy it. This is a very solid bracket that easily supports the Nikon D850 camera. The bracket is the Manfroto Q5. IO have 3 of these for all of my cameras.

Keep in mind that this L bracket is not compatible with Arco-Swiss tripod heads. You must be using the Manfroto proprietary quick release system to make use of this bracket.

For what it’s worth, I can’t comment on other brands, as I have not used them, but I have used RRS L brackets on all of my cameras for years with total satisfaction, and have no problem recommending them as a quality product.

Definitely, the RRS and Kirk L-brackets are top quality. I have Kirk L-brackets. Another alternative is to get a universal L-bracket. I have this one by Feisol. I use it with my D750 and D500. I replaced the standard screw with this D-ring screw.

The ideal L bracket will have a base contoured to fit the camera (thus not requiring a pin to stop the bracket rotating), plus a side handle that will allow the camera to be easily rotated from landscape to portrait, plus all openings required to allow fitting any cables you might desire. And allow fitting or included Arca Swiss plates. The L bracket is preferable to using a ball socket to rotate the camera thus preserving the lens center but probably more importantly to save suddenly having all the camera and lens weight hanging off to one side and maybe overbalancing everything. Many different models allow this.
Possibly the single most annoying feature of an L bracket is you now have an uncomfortable left hand grip on the camera. Some models allow removing the LHS bracket (but you can bet you won't be able to find it when you want it quickly). Another way might be to have a sleeve that slips over the side bracket but see above re finding it.
I try and use socket screws rather than the D-ring type or a normal screw because you can tighten up the screw easier.

You are neglecting the reason-for-being of L-brackets. It is to enable flipping a camera from horizontal to vertical on a tripod easily, keeping the lens centered on the rotational axis of the tripod head.

With a camera on a ball head or three-way head, mounted by the camera's tripod socket, when you tilt the camera 90 degrees its lens axis is no longer lined up with the rotation point. This throws off positioning when rotating the head.

I agree that the L-bracket makes hand-holding the camera awkward. But that's not the bracket's fault. Take the L-bracket off if not using a tripod.

I am a wild life Florida Wetlands photographer. Tripods get in the way. Again, I do not find L brackets hold any advantages for the way I shoot.

If one does not use a tripod or monopod, then what need is there for an L-bracket at all?

I use the promedia l bracket on my D850 and my Z6. The bracket is very well made and customer service is good. They also have a quick release for your camera strap that works great and I switch between cameras all the time in seconds. It is incorporated into the l bracket.
