The one designed for your specific camera model. Every camera is a unique design, in terms of size and the position of access points. Custom designed L brackets match openings in the bracket to the exact location on the body of these access points for cables, batteries, etc when the bracket is mounted. The idea is you attach the bracket to the camera and never have to remove it again, while having the ability to use every feature of the camera as if the bracket wasn't there.

It looks like the less expensive one (NIKON D850 ULTRALIGHT L PLATE) is made for the camera without the battery grip and appears to be one piece so it will always have the side mount - some designs allow you to remove the side and just use the base.

The D850 MODULAR PLATES has two versions. One for without the battery grip and one for with the battery grip and most likely the parts are not interchangeable. But in both cases it appears that you can use the base without the side L part. A cool thing about the removable L side bracket is that it can be extended away from the body and tightened to use as a handle.

The removable L side is probably not worth the extra $40 or 2+ ounces of weight.

RRS makes the very best and does charge likewise. Best of luck.

If you can resist spending exorbitant amounts of money, check out the Three-Legged Thing line. I have two of their brackets. Very nice pieces of hardware.
Even comes in two colors. Low model for cameras without battery grip, high model for cameras with.

They are found at: https://www.3leggedthing.com/

and they are sold by B&H, Adorama, and others.

Well over the last year every request for an L bracket (why don't people use search and save a lot of everybody else's time) about 5 people chime in with Kirk and RRS. It's got to a point where I wonder if they feel they had to defend their decisions. If you took this advice Kirk and RRS must sell thousands of brackets. Based on a lot (I mean a lot) of requests here I get the feeling that not every member has the wherewithal to buy the best but are denied an option of considering something that might be more in line with what they really need. Very hard to stuff up the design of an L bracket (generic designs aside). A bit of aluminium machined and anodised and they all perform the same. So far I have not heard of a single complaint against Sunwayfoto or SmallRig but few people recommending them because they are busy getting on with their photographic life and don't have time. For some reason owners of RRS and Kirk seem to have a need to mention them to the exclusion of all others. Ah it's late and I am going to bed !
Well over the last year every request for an L bra... (show quote)

Thank you for going to bed! Please, everyone, stop being judgmental. If a person asks for an opinion, many will reply and most will not. Being critical of those who do and by that judging their intention is neither helpful or appropriate.
If I have had success with a particular product or an issue it is appropriate to share that experience.
Interesting that you state ..:wherewithall to buy the best" and then become critical of the product.
A preference is just that, a preference; usually based on experience.
Apologies for the length, but resent the attitude that is often conveyed in responses. And, yes, this is with attitude.

I agree with those that say RRS with Kirk coming in second. One person said other brands would work for less money but the way I feel about it, spending $3200 for my D-850 (I know it is discounted now), I want a really strong and secure L bracket holding that puppy; ergo, RRS. If you spent big bucks for this wonderful camera and want to shave a few $$ off from the RRS bracket, your decision.

The inference here is that RRS is the best and you are an idiot for considering anything less. And this is not true. The Sunwayfoto is a really strong and secure L bracket holding our puppy; ergo Sunwayfoto. And you think you spent big bucks buying your D850 ? Come to NZ and spend even even bigger bucks. RRS and Kirk are not often found in our shops so you learn how to make intelligent decisions regarding accessories and save some money. Stop frightening people into buying things they don't need. Now I haven't seen a single person who recommends RRS or Kirk say that they bought X but found them lacking in some way so had to buy RRS or Kirk so how do you know they are the best ?
Seems a good nights sleep didn't help much.
Now to start on Merrell for making the first crappy sandal I have seen from them.

Really do not like L brackets. For me they make shooting verticals difficult. Also makes pushing all of my custom buttons much more difficult. If I have a long lens on the camera the L bracket makes it difficult to hold the lens properly. My 2 cents worth.

Manfroto makes an L bracket that sells for about $100.00 depending on where you buy it. This is a very solid bracket that easily supports the Nikon D850 camera. The bracket is the Manfroto Q5. IO have 3 of these for all of my cameras.

You are neglecting the reason-for-being of L-brackets. It is to enable flipping a camera from horizontal to vertical on a tripod easily, keeping the lens centered on the rotational axis of the tripod head.

With a camera on a ball head or three-way head, mounted by the camera's tripod socket, when you tilt the camera 90 degrees its lens axis is no longer lined up with the rotation point. This throws off positioning when rotating the head.

I agree that the L-bracket makes hand-holding the camera awkward. But that's not the bracket's fault. Take the L-bracket off if not using a tripod.
