I would buy a Nikon refurbished lens or a used lens. Be sure to check out KEH for used items.

Even this term could be misleading if not specific "Nikon". I bought a "factory refurb" lens on ebay, but the seller could not confirm it was Nikon refurbished so I returned it. If it was refurbished, even by a Nikon factory, but not a USA Nikon service center, then it could still be grey market and ineligible for Nikon USA repair.
