I print on Ilford Premium Photo Satin paper, using an Epson printer - in between glossy and matte. Reason: I just like it better!
I print using gloss, matte (a rag art paper), luster (semi-gloss), and for some images a pearl (sort of a pearlescent sheen, somewhat metallic). It all depends on the image. I have a series of macro shots of blown glass that I always print on gloss, for example, while most of my rustic still-life images are on the matte art paper (Entrada Rag). The semi-gloss "luster" finish is probably my favorite for most things. It is less reflective than gloss, but has a nicer color saturation and "glow" than a matte finish. Recently I have enjoyed printing a number of my images on a "pearl" paper, especially landscapes! It is wonderful for landscape images that feature sky and water. It makes dark blues, orange, pinks, and purples glow.
My lab, which I use for prints over 13x19 offers all of these four surface options, so I can pretty much match up my large and smaller prints.

I like candid photography in B&W, when I print myself I do so on gloss.
I always prefer the luster papers. The Epson premium luster is excellent...by my standards. I have come to think there is a huge amount of photographic bovine scatology in the photo inkjet paper business.

Just for fun. Whether you print your on photos or have a lab print them - which do you prefer, matte or glossy, and why?
Matte for sure for skin tones (portraits) and Animal shots
Glossy sometimes for flowers and landscape --makes the color "pop"
Some labs offer a --satin finish-- that is acceptable
Glossy. Matte looks dull and unsharp to me.

Satin to matte hands down in my book !!!

Glossy for 11X14 and below because it helps create some extra "pop" for the viewer (try the comparison yourself with a matte versus gloss 4X6).
Matte for 13X19 and above because it creates an "artsy" almost-canvas effect that is fingerprint proof - and minor ripples show up too bad on glossy prints that large unless you glue them to a backing board.

Ditto on the Epson Premium Luster. I've found it to be a good paper for both color and B&W. It seems to be a great paper somewhere between matte and glossy which brings out nice colors with good contrast. Tried a number of the 5 star papers and settled on this which is nice because I find myself not having to change paper for different photos---happy medium.........
I usually get metallic, which is annoyingly reflective, but anything I print for myself is getting framed and hung, so once it's up it's not moving.
No one I have photographed has every asked for matte--it's always the glossy.
When I was a kid we a dog that did that every chance he got.

Matte looks more elegant and has less reflection and no fingerprints!!
