Nothing is fool proof since they're making more capable fools these days.
The best you can do is fool-resistant.

First time I have ever heard of the problem and I'm on a couple of Nikon d500 forums and most people own the 200-500.

I believe the comment you got, and I quote, "all I got was an email stating that the lens was working properly", says it all.

I would have to agree as this seems like operator error.

In computers we have PEBCAK (problem exists between chair and keyboard)

I guess the photographic equivalent would be PEBVAR (problem exists between viewfinder and release)

No problems with mine. Used it in mid-summer in Northern Calif., maybe 85 degrees. Always worked fine.

I just got my D810 back from Nikon repair after having the lens mount ripped out of it. Now I get to try my new 200-500mm out with it and will see how it really shoots. Yea!! Will probably go out tomorrow and shoot a football or soccer match with it. Thanks

I have this lens and love it. It's my go to on wildlife shoots. Never had a problem with Nikon service.

I am having this exact problem, so I'm very interested if there is/was a solution. My lens was working just fine and when I was finished shooting at thst location and tried to retract the lens, it hit a physical stop right at the 400mm mark. I've tried everything I can think of over the last two days with

I don't own the 200-500mm, my 2 friends do. Both sent their lenses to Nikon. One friend kept the 200-500mm lens and it works wonderfully for him. The other friend closer to 77 yrs old and found it too heavy now, he sold his and got the Nikon 300mm F4 PF.
Good luck Wayne1954

I don't think it has anything to do with temperature. I've used it in single digits as well as triple digits with no problems. It's definitely a physical stop at 400mm. Not a gradual tension, no grinding or gritty sensation... just a stop.

I had Nikon's 200-500mm lens while living in Georgia for about 3½ years, including taking on Florida beach trips, and never had any such issues.
