On assignment UPI Boston bureau Oct. 1, 1979. Cover photo tight crop shows Pope John Paul ll, knelling to kiss the ground, that was the key shot in the making to get. w/Nikon F3 & Nikkor 600mm f5.6 at f5.6. Opening cover page one, shows my inside cover page two, the Pope & Rosalynn Carter . . .
Photo two shows Pope John Paul ll and Roslynn Carter (President Jimmy Carter's wife). w/Nikon FTN & Nikkor 1000mm f11 lens. All photos made with Kodax TRI-X 400 ASA 35mm b&w film pushed 1-stop.
I had a prime position at Logan Airport Boston on the roof-top with my competitor, Jim McNight covering for AP New York. Below on the ground was a red carpet with a small grandstand 150 press members!

Thanks AP.......those were the days.
Interesting to see your shots while on assignment from back in the day.

It was a true highly regarded moment indeed, SB! Full of excitement every minute. My position was elite on the roof. Rolled out Red-Carpet below with grandstand full as can be with the press!
Only two on the roof. AP Gawrys UPI, and Jim McNight from AP NYC. We had quite the historical assignment and the best position too beat!
The darkrooms were in the rest rooms. Mens Room UPI and Womans room AP. Pope's jet landed 3:20 PM.
Soon as I exposed my shoots the film was rooled in the caset and the runner standing there took the film to the darkroom for processing. CIAO, AP
