Will a 70-300 AF-P 4.5-6.3 lens work on my nikon D7100 camera? Thanks Jim Bianco, lens is nikon.
Hi Jim,
Be aware there are three Nikkor AF-P 70-300mm:
1. AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-
5.6E ED VR Lens is a full frame capable FX lens and at $547 is considerably more expensive than the other two.
2. AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-
6.3G ED
VR DX is a more affordable crop-only lens
with image stabilization. List price $397.
3. AF-P 70-300mm f/4.5-
6.3G ED DX is the most affordable, another crop only lens, but
without image stabilization. List price is $347.
Between #2 and #3, for only $50 more I'd make a point of getting the image stabilized version, because that feature is particularly helpful on longer telephotos like this lens.
There also are...
4. AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6D ED, a full frame capable lens using old style "AF" focus drive (no motor in lens), which works on D7100 but not on D3000/D5000-series cameras. Not image stabilized. $170.
5. AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR, might be discontinued now, full frame capable, image stabilized and an IF (internal focusing) design. $349 factory refurbished.
You should search online for reviews to carefully compare image quality and other performance differences before purchasing. I don't have experience with all these Nikkors. Ken Rockwell's website likely has reviews of them all and might be a good place to start.

I'm fully aware of the AF-P related compatibility issues and didn't repeat them in my response because they'd already been thoroughly discussed in previous responses, including yours.
I was trying to add to the discussion with information the original poster might find useful, trying to choose a lens to purchase.

I have this lens and love it (the FX version) on my D7200 (almost identical to the 7100)....had to do a firmware update to v1.04...the limitation Nikon refers to usually is the inability to turn off/on VR from the menu as there is no menu option as on newer bodies such as the D500 or D7500. However for this particular lens it doesn't matter as they did include a hardwired VR on/off switch on the lens body.
I also have the 10-20 AF-P lens which works fine too with the 7200, but I can't turn off the VR...so far not a problem as I shoot handheld (usually tripod use calls for the VR to be turned off).
I use the Nikon 70-300mm on my D850 body with excellent results. I recommend the lens if you need that range.

This is the type of answer and well as the type of question that tends to justify the response: why don't you google and research it yourself?
You'll likely need to download and install the current D7100 firmware updates to enable the AF-P lens. But, the lens is listed as compatible with only a minor bit of initiative and investigation to find a compatibility chart from B&H. A more definitive response can be obtained directly from the Nikon site, much more definitive than B&H and / or the UHH crowd ...

Why are some hoggers really nice and helpful and others are like like chg canon? If you feel that someone should look up info for themselves don't reply and subject the rest of us to your snark.

About 97% of the time I am nice and helpful. If the OP is a putz, I respond in kind. If your skin is not thick enough, then don't post.
And if I tell someone they could have looked it up themselves, I always supply the link that the OP could have found in 5 seconds or less.
And I find it interesting that administration allowed this post on the photography forum. Shame on the administration. My post on PHOTOGRAPHY was moved to another forum, but this person, who posted NOTHING about photography, gets put on. GO FIGURE. What a waste of a post.
