I looked at the list from the link and it does list 23 countries, although I personally consider Trinidad and Tobago to be part of the South American continent.

I recommend Andy Biggs. I have had experience on trip to Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Namibia with Andy. His trips concentrate on the best photograph experience with one person per seat in the safari vehicles. He knows many of the lodge managers personally.

I recently did a photo tour with Federico Veronesi. We did a private tour, 6 photographers from Long Island. It was my 3rd time in Africa and absolutely the best. Federico is a wonderful photographer and tour guide that lives in Nairobi. He is well known in Amboseli and Masai Mara. His own truck is at the Mara Bush Camp. He knows the areas well, knows where many of the big cats are and has connections with some of the Masai. He was able to contact one of the Masai to help us track a huge elephant with the longest tusks.
I would highly recommend Federico.

I've often wondered what people are thinking when they say African safari tour. They apparently don't realize how big and diverse the continent of Africa really is. There are 54 countries in Africa, 54 of them. Heck, there's only 23 countries in North America and 80% of the area is only 3 of those 23 countries. Of the 54 countries in Africa, 11 of them are well known for safaries. 11 is definitely a lot less than 54 but it's still 11 separate countries. I doubt if many safaries cover ground in more than 1 country or at the most 2. Botswana, Kenya and South Africa are probably the three most popular safari countries but I have no way of knowing where you are going on safari because you didn't mention a country, you named a whole continent.
To get my point across, it's like saying, I'm going on a photography expidition in North America, please recommend a few good spots for photographs. What I didn't mention is, the expidition is in the country of Belize.
My point is, knowing the continent may not be very helpful at all; knowing which country is!

I think you mean North, central AND South America...South America is a separate continent.

North America has 23 countries. South America has 14 if you count the Falkland Island and French Guiana. Also Central America is a subset of North America.

My wife and i are planning on doing an African Safari tour, with an emphasis on Photography. We see many options and it dawned on me, very many of you must have taken such a tour and would like your suggestions as to who to travel with, ie what company tour should we consider. I would also be interested in other tours that you have been on and again tour operator suggestions.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions
Chris

I have thought for a while that a website that lists many of the different photographic tours available for different regions of the world would be a fantastic tool for people like you and me looking for a photographic trip. One could have people post reviews, links to their photos from a particular trip, etc. By having ads, one could even make money off such a website! If anyone has the expertise, time, etc, please do it!
As to your question Chris, there are a ton of such tours. However, as noted by someone else, to give you particular suggestions, you would have to be more specific, including as they noted a particular region of Africa, budget, size of group, etc. And what are your expectations for a "photo tour", guidance in photography? Or?

Take a look at Londolozi for a safari. It is a wonderful experience that FOCUSES on photography. One of the best trips of my life. We also spent some time in Capetown. Also great for photography.

I don't know if you would consider a self drive trip but my wife and I spent 2 weeks driving in Kruger NP and then 3 nights at Londolozi. It is a top notch operation, but expensive. You can reserve lodging at various camps inside Kruger so you are there early and late. We also stayed at a few wonderful resorts about an hour away.

A wonderful company that plans trips for your self drive adventure is Audley. Full planning, detailed maps, vehicle rental, etc.

Have a great time!

You must not have paid close attention in elementary school geography. The southernmost country on the North American continent is a little country called Panama, you may have heard of it. If Belize is not on the North American continent, where is it? The North American continent consists of Canada, Greenland, which is part of a European country, The USA, excluding the parts in the south Pacific, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahama, and a whole bunch of island nation's in the Caribbean.
Yes, there is a Central America, but it is NOT a separate continent, it is part of the North American continent. I never mentioned anything about the South American continent so I'm not sure why you have mentioned it. To answer your question, no, there most indeed is a South America, and it's a continent, unlike central America, which is not.

Speaking of nit picking, you're pointing out minor spelling errors on UHH?! You don't know what countries are part of the continent of North America but you jump on the plural spelling of safari?! Maybe you need to take heed of your own advice.

You also obviously missed the point. People always say, African safari, but Africa is a continent not a country. When asking for information it may be more helpful if the actual country the safari is taking place in is mentioned because each country is different.

Please look up Wikipedia on The Americas, North America, and Subcontinent, then you will get a better understanding. In one breath, you talk about people (who may not have been to Africa before) asking about African safaris and not specifying whether it is Botswana safari, or Zimbawe safari. or Namibia safari, or whatever African country which the OP may not know, when he obviously was just asking for a general guidance. Next you talk about North America (without mentioning the Continent of North America) and Belize which if one Googles it describes Belize as being a nation on the Eastern Coast of Central America even though it is in the North America Continent.

Lots of great suggestions in this line, but until Mr. Hays defines his budget and expectations, it will be difficult to answer his inquiry. Not to demean his question, but it is kinda like saying I would like suggestions on buying a vehicle. The options for an African safari are almost unlimited, and each of us has a different vision of his expectations.

I just returned from Kenya (4 parks) and Tanzania (2 parks) with Friendly Planet. Not a photo safari, but great shots, great guides, and top facilities. Will do again.

I would think that the OP wants to see the big 5 as most newbies to African safaris wish to, so go easy and no need to nit pick. By the way, since when has North America include 23 countries ?? Is there no Central America and South America ?? Correct spelling for plural of safari is safaris, and expedition rather than expidition. Belize is definitely not in North America.

Talk about nit picking.

As a very general rule: the more you pay, the smaller the group and the roomier the transport. Also, you could have a guide AND a driver, and the guide would be the photo leader. If you stay in private tent camps the service and experience will be way better than the lodges that take large group tours. You may never get the kind of photos a pro gets with his or her massive lenses, weeks of time, private access, and expenses paid. Enjoy what you are seeing as you are seeing it. Look without the camera as much as with.
