If there is a learni g curve for win 10, why not apply that learning curve to linux and never have to worry whether your os spies on you, never have to be forced to accept updates, and the os and all your software is free. And there are ways to make mainstream software that is not formatted for linux work on a linux machine.
So if I have to get a Windows emulator, why not just run Windows?
Just because Unix rarely ever crashes; do the emulators come with built in periodic crashes?

Don't forget it is as easy to transition to Mac OS as it is to windows 10. XP support has been gone for several years, but it still works every day to drive special equipment that need it to live.
I have a high-resolution flatbed scanner that will only run under Windows XP. I have Windows 10 on my desktop and I run a Virtual Machine on the desktop that allows me to run XP on the Virtual Machine. The scanner runs fine under the VM.
I have a Surface Book 2 running Windows 10. I love it, except there is no CD/DVD drive. I tried running an external DVD drive - it worked for a while, but a recent update has stopped it working. I have quite a few CDs that I would love to be able to play on the Surface Book. If anyone has any suggestions for reliably having the access to my CD/DVDs on this machine, I would be very grateful. I am fine with doing technical bits if needed, but I need to get some guidance on the direction I should go. Meantime, next on the agenda is digging in the basement for an old portable CD player (that I think I still have) or a headset with separate plugs for right and left channel so I can use a full size player. TIA for any guidance!

I use a "Plugable" dock that allows me to use a CD/DVD drive, keyboard, and external monitor on my Asus Chromebook. I've had no problems since using this setup.
Thank you for the quick response - would you mind telling me which CD/DVD drive you use? Is it included with the dock for the Chromebook?
I have a desktop computer that still runs XP, and my favorite laptop runs Win7. Lack of Micro$oft support is like not taking a lawnmower with you when you go swimming. Security is not a major issue, and I don't even use a real-time antivirus app. Instead:
1- I image my system drive 2 or 3 times each week using
Macrium Reflect -- it's free. I image to an external drive (capacity 2 terabytes) and retain images 2-3 months (first-in, first-out).
2- Each night at bed-time I use two on-demand scanners:
Emsisoft Emergency Kit (EEK), and
HitmanPro (HMP). EEK is free. HMP is not free but offers a free 30-day trial. After 30 days HMP will continue to function just fine, but only as a scanner to find malware. HMP will not clean-away malware unless you buy a subscription. That is NOT a problem because I do my cleaning by restoring an image (item 1), so HMP's cleaning services are unnecessary.
I sometimes enjoy surfing the dark side of the internet so I sometimes (rarely) pick up an infection. When that happens, I simply restore a clean image and POOF! -- suddenly the sun shines, skies are blue, birds warble sweetly, & all is right with the world.

I have three systems still running Win 7, but looking to replace an 8 or 9 year old hiccuping laptop.
The replacement will come with Win 10.
(The other two will get replaced when they crap out also.)
My

Then a DOS based system running DOS 1.x.
Yea, I'm old...
Windows 10 has a lot of update problems and they not you control the updates, it is a spy machine and they own everything including your photo's and e-mail. You only own the frame it is in, it is an unpleasant feeling and operating system, I just bought a mac, i'm not using windows 10 any more. MAC also has a better photo system, much better.

You are unnecessarily paranoid. I have been a software developer for 40 years and Windows power user since the first stable version, Windows 3.1, was released. I have never experienced any reason for me to leave Windows for a Mac. Suggesting things like they own my photos is ridiculous to say the least, as is the spying thing which is fodder for conspiracy theorists and other crazies.
Dean L has posted here just 3 times since he joined almost a year ago, His previous, and second, post, from last November basically said the same thing, that Microsoft was spying on us.
You actually posted twice to that thread.
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-562460-1.htmlThree posts in his first year, and two of them on the same paranoid subject. Hmmm. He must be fun at parties.
I joined this site for information and enjoyment of other views on camera's and other topics. I didn,,'t know the amount of times I entered a message would receive criticism, I thought I could express my view with out the permission of mwsilvers. If he thinks calling others crazy, paranoid, and other names proves his intelligence and his views are the only one that have merit he needs his own platform and site. He should read the Windows 10 agreement all of it. Those who thinks he knows everthing but knows little might have a good political career. I might have a different view then his but Im not crazy. Maybe I can enjoy other veiws then his, perhaps that will be possible.
I am fun at parties, but select the ones with proper people
