A replacement is a walk in the park compared to a repair. My replacement works much better than the repair in my case. You're looking at less down time. Good luck. Mine was a reversal though.

Good to know. My shoulder doesn't seem to get much of a workout - more my elbow.

I had total replacement surgery on my right shoulder in October, 2018. You will be out of action as far as taking photos for at least two months. And even after you are out of the sling (I was in one for 49 days), you will not have the strength to raise the camera to eye level at first. Rehab is long but productive. I'm 72 years old, in excellent shape, and I'm back bowling, hiking and taking photos. Be patient.

My wife had it. It will take a while to get the strength back. Do your exercise but don't push beyond what your doctor/physical therapist recommends. You might want to consider getting a powered recliner chair to sleep in for the first month or so after surgery since sleeping laying down might be a problem. If you do buy a chair, get it from a medical supply store and not a furniture store. The two are built differently with different design criteria. It might be a good time for you to practice or learn photo-editing and take some on-line courses. Best of luck.

Use the surgery as an excuse to get a nice high pixel full frame mirrorless and either a versatile small prime lens or a small zoom. 4 years ago I crushed my left arm and had reconstruction surgery, now rebuilt with titanium. My. Photos are better than ever and my dslr rarely comes out of the cabinet. All the best.

I had the very same thing (complete right shoulder replacement) back at the end of Feb. 2018. I had gotten to the point where I couldn't even lift my camera up to my face. I have a Nikon 5300. I was able to go on a trip to Alaska at the middle of June that summer without any difficulty. Now, nearly 2 years later I'm taking pictures like a pro (ha, ha!). The key to recovery is to do exactly what the Drs. tell you -- do the rehab & don't miss physical therapy. I would do the surgery again in a heartbeat. It completely changed my life & if there comes the time that my other shoulder needs it, I wouldn't hesitate to get it done. Good luck with yours.

That is the type of replacement I am having. I will take the PT as if my life depends on it. Thanks.

That was the surgery I had, as well. You will do well if you really work at it immediately after the surgery, I would bet. Good luck.

Had shoulder surgery in 2004 - 5 cm tear over 4 hours surgery. Have not had any problems taking pictures even with a 160-600mm lens handheld.

I've had a total let shoulder replacement - and the results are wonderful!
Previously, I had a rotator cuff repair, but it fell apart after a face plant while trying to learn snowboarding. The shoulder was so-so at best even before the fall. For that reason, my strength was poor before the replacement surgery, and it took several months of therapy and home exercises to get better strength, and now the shoulder is the best it's been in many years.
If you have shoulder problems that meeting the requirements for replacement, do it! Find an experienced shoulder surgeon, and you'll be very, very happy with the result.

I have had friends have this surgery. The key to any surgery and recovery is follow Doctors orders. Do the physical therapy, and any at home physical therapy.
I had one friend that wouldn’t do what the doctor said and the physical therapy at home she didn’t have good results at all. Good luck!

Hey Hogs,
Have any of you had shoulder surgery and still been able to take good photos? In two weeks I am having complete should replacement surgery on my right shoulder. Yep, the one that does most of the camera maneuvering. If you had the same, were you able to overcome the restrictions and still take good photos?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, I have and there is no problem handling a camera.

BUT you MUST follow through with the post surgery physical therapy program! For the 9-12 months that follow the surgery your PT sessions have to be have to be the most important activity in your daily life. If you get bored or lazy and start skipping the sessions or perform the exercises half heartedly you could end up worse off than before the surgery.

I had a total replacement of my left shoulder several years ago. Recovery was painful. Work hard in rehab. I have almost 100% range of motion in the replaced shoulder with no pain. Good luck. Still

I agree with the gentleman that stated that a repair is worst. Full functionality is NEVER achieved even with good physical therapy. A shoulder replacement with good physical therapy will not cause disability instead will lead to a functional joint.

I didn't have surgery but did fracture mine in 4 maybe 5 places. The only advice I'd pass along is my physical therapist worked miracles. Your physical therapist will be your best friend in getting you back to normal in the minimum time with minimum complications. I hope you have one as competent as mine.

I had a left shoulder replacement about 10 years ago. Reversal in which the ball and socket are reversed. Not to scare you, but it did hurt and my arm was in a sling for a couple of months and had physical therapy(water therapy). Motion slowly came back and it was about 2 years before I had full movement. I was in my mid 70's, so maybe that's why it took a bit longer. As for using a camera, I was able to after a few months as long as I was able to keep my arms close to my body. BTW, if you travel by air, tell the TSA agent you have a shoulder replacement and if you can't bring your arms up over your head, they'll manually scan you. You'll do fine
