Hey Hogs,
Have any of you had shoulder surgery and still been able to take good photos? In two weeks I am having complete should replacement surgery on my right shoulder. Yep, the one that does most of the camera maneuvering. If you had the same, were you able to overcome the restrictions and still take good photos?

Thank you in advance for your help.

A replacement is a walk in the park compared to a repair. My replacement works much better than the repair in my case. You're looking at less down time. Good luck. Mine was a reversal though.

You may need a lighter camera for a while... and/or the use of a monopod. But not for too long. But you should get back to full speed. I asked a patient how her two shoulders (both had been replaced in the past few years) were doing. "They are the best joints in my body" she advised me. Good luck!

I myself have never had shoulder surgery, although I have had a few friends that had Knee and Hip replacements.
The one thing they emphasized most was the Post operation recovery and how important the diligent Physical Therapy is to achieving a full and successfull recovery.
So, I wish you the best in your future Surgery and look forward to hearing from you on your recovery.

About 6 years ago I had rotator cuff surgery. It takes time to heal. Make sure you follow through the with the physical therapy. Very important. Taking pictures again was never part of the goal or concern. I developed a new understanding of those who are, were handicapped. I became more involved in their needs.
I would hope I would be thought of as someone who is concerned rather than a person who takes pictures. Remember the PT is paramount.

Had the surgery after a bad fall...all went well and was back to full rotation in about 4 weeks. Only residual is a loss of some strength which can return with physical therapy. Good luck!

Ain't that the truth about developing new understandings... until you walk in someone else shoes you just don't know...

Similar experience - 75% tear of my left shoulder rotator cuff. Initially, the pain was intense. I did PT 2x a week for 8 months. My range of motion was 110% of my right shoulder - but to this day, I have not regained much of my strength. However, I was able to handle a camera 12 months after the operation, and I currently walk trails with a 150-600mm and a full frame camera, for hours at a time - no tripod or monopod. I consider myself very lucky. Without an aggressive course of PT, I doubt I would have seen the progress I made.

You are right. Even though my problem would be short-lived. Others went on every day.

Techniques and components used in orthopedic surgery are advancing so rapidly that any horror stories you may have heard about the procedure are prone to be outdated. A friend of mine had both shoulders replaced, several years apart. The first one required a large incision. The second one required two, much smaller, incisions. He is an orthopedic surgeon. He has no issues and has performed hundreds of surgeries since then, including my own hip replacement in '17.
A botched surgery of any kind can be devastating and life altering. Please check carefully the reputation and history of not only the surgeon but the hospital as well. Infection is a major issue in hospitals and it kills. The internet gives you the option of easily checking such things. Use it.
Best wishes to you.

Had the rotator cuff surgery - shoulder pain had gotten bad enough to interfere with sleep. Recuperation from that surgery was the worst I have experienced, and fairly lengthy. Recovered majority of strength and mobility, no problems with cameras / lenses, only Archery. Don't believe in using narcotic pain killers, but was forced to use them for a short time by pain during recuperation. Be prepared - hopefully your experience will be more comfortable than mine, and outcome as favorable.
