I've shot with the Nikon 18-200mm lens. It has a lot of barrel distortion at the wide end and a lot of pincushion distortion at long focal lengths. Be prepared to do those distortion corrections.

When you photograph architecture, watch out if you point the camera up. You will get converging verticals. Volume deformation can also appear. I took this photo and corrected it in DxO labs ViewPoint 3.

Thank you. Fortunately I have adequate software.

My wife & I are taking a Mediterranean cruise next month, and will be staying in Barcelona for a couple of days. I have a Nikon D7100. Thinking of 35mm 50mm & 18-200. We’re travelling right now, and I’m a new believer in: ‘Holy cow! This stuff gets heavy when you get old”. Do you think that setup will suffice? (Also taking wife’s G1X p&s). Thanks in advance.

Murray, I cruised into Barcelona and stayed for 3 days. I had a wide angel, a 24-125 and a 28-300. I seldom used a long lens, but frequently used a wide angle or the 24-125. You "have" to go to the Sagrade Familia, Gaudi buildings, and, if you have time, Montserrat. These are exception things to see and they generally need a 25mm focal length...maybe smaller.

As someone else pointed out, watch out for pick-pocets. Two stories...on the Hop-on-Hop-off the public service announcement was NOT to carry your passport - instead carry a cop of it and when I was having lunch at an outside cafe in the middle of two roads, there was a very attractive woman having a cup of coffee. Then I noticed a handcuff on her wrist which lead down to her attache on the ground. Never seen anything like if before.

Enjoy the trip!

Thanks Base:

Thanks for the advice - duly noted. Will copy passports before we leave.

Fur sure! You can shoot the Sagrata from top-to-bottom with that and not have to back-up 2 blocks.

But you will miss most of the fantastic detail other than what is right on front of you. If only one lens, then a zoom is the answer.

Oh, and another thing about security. Put your damn phone away and pay attention to your surroundings!

I will be taking a few more lenses. I talk on the phone very rarely🙂

If your 35 is fast, I would take it and leave the 50 behind. The Sagrada basilica is beautiful (plan for at least 3-4 hours there) but can be dark in areas. Don’t even think of a tripod or monopod. Way too many people to allow you to set up. Also, be careful. We had a professional driver and a guide. The guide told us to leave our valuables and wallets with the driver. He said one of the worst cities in Europe for pickpockets.

If you are traveling through Madrid on your flight in or your flight out, you will have to go through passport control. Supposed to take 40 minutes. It took us 2 hours and 30 minutes. Made our plane with seconds to spare. Get off your plane and immediately get in line. Bathrooms and souvenirs only if you have time.

Beautiful city. Have a wonderful time.

Thanks John:

The 35 is a 1.4 so should be OK. Was made aware of the crime problem on the Hog, so will be careful. I think we'll stick with group tours as we’re not getting any younger. Aware of Sagrada, so it’s on the list. We’re not travelling thru Madrid, so should be good there.

Thanks again for the advice.

We'll be on the MSC Seaview set sail on Nov 8th, with 2 days in Barcelona for the pre-cruise tour.
Tell us more when you return.

I am debating should I take the Canon with the Tamron 16-300 or a pair of Nikon 1 with the 6.7-10 and 10-100 zoom which I enjoyed so much from last year's cruise.

We’ll be on Celebrity Reflection. We land on Oct 10, spend 2 nights in a Barcelona then board the ship on the 12th. My personal thought on gear is the Nikon 1 setup.... I’m going to take Nikon 18-200 &35mm. My wife will take her Canon G1X. Enjoy & will look forward to hearing from you on return

That wasn't directed at you. It was a general precaution to everyone to help avoid pickpockets and strap slashers.

We went on a Med cruise last year. Loved it.

I had a couple lenses with me but never took my 18-300 off the camera. I used the full range of the zoom. When I needed more wide angle I just took several shots and put together at home.

Using one lens made sightseeing easier. Didn’t have to keep changing lenses so didn’t miss anything. I did mostly quick shots in burst mode.

I got enough really good shots to put together a really good book from Shutterfly. Their largest book with max pages was needed to cover everything we saw. Waited for 50% off with unlimited pages. Costs about $40.

Anyway have a blast. I know we did.

Agree, no need for the 50, 35 & zoom only.

The 50 may come in handy for low light situations.

Thank you Charlie:

I thought I had replied, but the iPad ate it. I expect a similar situation with my 18-200, but we’ll see. I’m gonna take a couple of small primes just in case.

Thanks for responding Murray
