I have had my 200-500 since it came out and have used it daily in Florida Wetlands and have NEVER had an issue like that with my lens. Are you SURE they are telling you the truth.
Please read the reviews on B&H web site. They have had 617 reviews and I bet none of them list the issues you have written. I find it VERY HARD to believe that all three lenses failed in a matter of days. Just does not sound right. I don't believe it.

I’ve been using mine in the heat and humidity of Central Florida for a couple of years with no problems at all!

Almost 3 years ago I picked the Tamron 150-600mm G2 over the Nikon 200-500 as the same price point (around $1300)..I picked the Tamron over the Nikon for my Nikon D500 as the Tamron is lighter for hand-holding, and has a wider range of zoom, and an ARCA type foot on the lensmount. At that time, BOTH lenses received top notch positive reviews. I've had no problems with this lens( and D500) since purchase in November of 2016!

I believe, after reading all these responses, that the OP just needs to get three new friends.

Seriously, after a couple of years use I can report 'no issues'.

I have read that some folks trying to use the lens as a push/pull zoom have encountered issues.

Thanks Bill, I think the 200-500mm is an excellent lens. The quality of the images are outstanding.
I still scratch my head about the failures. The only reason I posted the question to see if there was a common factor. You'd think I insulted them personally.

Bought mine in 2015 and have had zero problems. The hottest weather I have been in is about 105F.

I have 3 friends that own this lens. All 3 of their lenses failed them in a matter of days. During a hot humid period . At the 500mm position the zoom ring wouldn't turn lower than 400mm. The lens was stuck between 400 and 500mm. Some say the zoom got stuck because it was a hot day. I live in Montreal. Canada. Does this happen in Florida or other southern parts of the country, where it's even hotter climate. Anyone with this lens experience the same thing ?

They sent them to Nikon to get fixed, and they were, but don't really trust them anymore

I had problem with mine as well.
Problems with mechanical things are part of life, its how the manufacturer deals with it that makes a difference. Nikon will disappoint you.

I live near Houston Tx. Summer temps are upper 90s virtually every day, occasional 100s, with high humidity. Have taken thousands of pics with it over this last summer (mainly wildlife especially birding), the majority at 500mm. I constantly move the zoom ring back to 200mm and lock it for carry between shooting spots. No problems at all. I highly recommend this lens if you need a longer telephoto on a budget.

I rented this lens for s trip to Pantanal in Brasil, within 2 days the lens refused to go back to the 200 mm range, it would stop around 250 mm, so I could not lock it at the shortest length to carry it. Then the zoom ring started jumping out of alignment when going farther than 400 mm so I had to go back and carefully extend it past the 400 to make sure it did not jump out of alignment. You can already guess how many opportunities for pictures of BIF or other critters I missed. Conclusion, I decided not to buy it and I got myself the 500 mm which should arrive by next week.

I have had my 200-500 Nikon for 8 months and it has given me faultless performance. I live right on the Pacific Ocean which is not a humid area like Florida but no problems.

Which 500 are you getting? Were you able to nab a PF?

I have owned this lens and had no such issues. I sold it to a friend and he has no issues with it either. Best of luck.

Did you find out what caused the problem ?
