It's a bit further than 20 miles (about 30), but the Great Dismal Swamp Canal Trail may be worth the trip.

Not sure when you're visiting VB, but there is a free air show at NAS Oceana this weekend. No Blue Angels this year, they're getting the Thunderbirds. Also, for a quick side trip, there's also the Adam Thoroughgood house, quaint little cottage built 16-1700's.

If you're ever there around Christmas, they have a great light show on the beach. You drive along the display in your car.
