The peak that you thought was Mt. Whitney is Lone Pine Peak. It appears higher than Mt. Whitney as it is closer to Highway 395. Thanks to Larry S. for the excellent photo of Mt. Whitney!

The photo was not mine. I climbed the East Face of Mt. Whitney in the mid 70's by
a 5th Class technical rock climbing route though and descended by the Mountaineer's
Route down a snow chute off the north side. I also used to stop in Lone Pine for breakfast
at a little cafe that had an excellent view of Mt. Whitney and Keeler Needle . Keeler Needle
is that dramatic looking Column just to the South (left in the photo) of Whitney itself.
I can't remember what the column to the left of Keeler Needle is called.

ps; Somewhere I still have a Hopalong Cassidy plate that was part of a set with
a cereal bowl and a cup I think. From when I was about 5 years old. The plate is all
that is left and it has been broken and glued back together.

The peak to the left of Keeler Needle is Day Needle, then left of that is Third Needle. I used to backpack as far as Trail Camp and hike up to the top from there in the late 90's. No, I didn't do Whitney in a Day. It was actually 4 days in the middle of September when permits were no longer needed. Passing through the Needles was always a thrill, but I imagine climbing up with a rope and descending a snow chute in the Mountaineers Route would be even more thrilling! All of my photos are slides so I was happy to see the photo you posted. Wonderful memories.

Going back over my photos, I found this hidden in the background. Had to crop deep for it though. I will get a better shot when I pass back thru with my long lens.

That is a dirt track up onto one of the Alabama Hills. Lots of trails, 4 wheel tracks and some maintained dirt roads out there in the rocks and arroyos.

The Alabama Hills hosted quite a few Hollywood features. Now that you have been there you will recognize them in any number of old time westerns or features that need a striking outdoor location. You make me miss being there and taking one last hike up to the top.Anything is possible. I’ve been known to be wrong often.
