If it is like most of the small aircraft that fly into the Western U.S. it is a Q400 or something of similar size. I can't speak for United, but what Alaska does is let you keep your carry on with you and then check it into baggage as you board the plane.

My daughter gets a Wheel Chair pass for her Cello and then has the attendant store it and the return it at the end of the flight. There is a wait to get his done. - dave

A lot of very good suggestions here. If you have a small pelican bag and Li-ion batteries it would have to go in the cabin with you. I was once told I had to check a camera bag in baggage but when I told them it had Li-ion batteries I got to carry it on board with me.

Here is a different solution that has worked for me. I bought a photographers vest with many many pockets. Loaded up my gear in the vest and wore it on. Worked great.

That exact issue happened to me over ten years ago. I was not warned ahead of time as you have been. My wife almost went ahead without me, until the flight crew finally allowed me to take my backpack with me.
That was the last time I ever traveled by air, and never will!

If you know where you will be staying have your equip shipped there or to a pick-up facility.

Possible other solution--either very easy or stupid because I'm not thinking of something. I'm pretty sure the flight from Honolulu to SFO would be big enough for your equipment in an overhead bag and under the seat bag.

So the issue is SFO to LAS. There are lots of flights from SFO to LAS every day--can you possibly find another flight on a bigger plane and change your reservation? To me that would be the simplest fix. I agree that you need more equipment for the trip you're taking (it sounds wonderful to me). I've flown many very small planes in Africa but never had as much equipment as you're taking and you will need the long lens. Good luck and hope you have a great trip.

Second option is to change your whole flight and go through LAX or San Diego. I know they have bigger planes from San Diego to LAS because I'm booked on one for October. I think Southwest is now flying from Honolulu to San Diego.

Did you buy a cheap ticket that does not allow carry on? Ive traveled a lot and never saw that. But then again, i think you said it was United. You may call the airlines fir clarification.

Even on commuter planes they will take the bag at the gste and put it in the belly of the plane, aside from checked bags.

I flew First Class in June and July with United and the legs of the flight that were United affiliates, gate checked carry-ons over a certain size. As stated in a previous reply, the dimensions are on the individual carrier websites. So much for the cheap ticket theory.

Insurance is cheap enough and some may benefit with some peace of mind. This is a fairly frequent topic typically due to people not checking the carrier sites. You can also call and repeat the calls until an agent gives you the answer that best satisfies your query...they are not all on the same page.

Aloha

Just did a similar trip OGG to SNA also no carry on's they mean suitcase sized bags I used a 'gym bag' w/my gear, no hassle. My son had a carry on and had to check it on. Flew United to see the eclipse in 2017 3 bags. allowed only 2, #3 was also overweight but a local fellow was akamai and got #3 on for $20 supposed to be $350 So kep your gear w/ you in a small backpack check on clothes, etc

Aloha from Maui

I shipped cameras and lenses ahead on a trans atlantic trip, and boby boy was it pricey. But easy and effective. A big way to run up the cost is to have a store pack stuff, buy a bos and some peanuts and pack it yourself.

All in all, I've used the gate check option and never had the least problem. But I suggest you don't be one of the cheapskates that is looking for a camera insert so they can used a cheap backpack. I've traveled a lot with thinktank bags and am very pleased and you can hardly tell them from new.

Find out how both states treat starter pistols. If they are allowed, put it in the camera equipment bag. You'll need to declare the starter pistol as a "firearm" when you check it at the airport. Doing this increases the security attention paid to your bag. Can't take credit for this, learned it from a pro that had had lots of equipment stolen over the years.

Sounds like it may be time for a Lumix FZ2500. One camera, does it all, and no hassles.

I booked a flight to Las Vegas from Honolulu for a two week RV trip. I am taking a two cameras, and three or four lenses. It didn't say anything when I booked the flight, but the itinerary they sent (United) says no carry on bags probably due to a small plane from SFO to LAS. So I'm not sure what to do now. Cancel and pay the cancellation fee? Gate check backpack in carry on suitcase? Check a pelican case and risk theft? None of these options are ideal. It is a once in a lifetime kind of trip, with stops at national parks, etc., including the elk rut at Rocky Mountain NP, so it is essential I take my gear (photography is one of the prime reasons for the trip). I can take a personal item (I have a messenger bag that holds a camera and two small lenses), but the telephotos needed for wildlife won't fit.

Any advice?

Yes, if you have sufficient time. Send your camera equipment ahead by FexEx or UPS. And insure it. Not that costly, and gets around all the airline BS.

Depends on where it's sent, if it's sent to Tuscany, its well over a hundred. Not as much as just buying it a ticket, but more than excess baggage costs many times.

Insurance will be expensive; but, in the grand scheme of things: consider what your trip may be costing you
