In the grand scheme of things why not pursue insurance through your homeowners insurance company or suitable alternative and check it as baggage? A good case will last many years and protect your goodies.

I guess having to fly everywhere is the downside of living in Paradise.

Another cheap alternative. Approach one or two strangers who will board the same flight. Ask each to carry a small personal bag packed with some of your gear. Sounds fool-proof to me. LOL.

I fly First. And always board first. And never have a problem with overhead space for my equipment. And that's why I fly First. It costs. But it's worth the price.

Whatever you do, don't put your batteries in the check-in luggage - TSA took 2 of mine on an international flight from Beijing to San Francisco!

I was using "Paradise" as another name for Hawaii, home of the OP, the guy who can't just drive from home to a photo-shoot, which would be my first choice.

Driving from SF is your best option. Lots of good things to shoot along the way.

Wish I could, but on a tight schedule.

Since for you this is an important photographic trip may I suggest that you call United and negotiate with them. If there is a fee to pay in my case I would be willing to pay for it.

Thank you, I'll probably do that. The other option is my fiance, who is going with me, is a Mileage Plus 1K member and can carry on, so she can carry it.

That it is. And long flights too. The shortest flight from here is 5 hours to SFO.
