I remember from your Glacier posts that you have the 8+. I have read that the Moment lenses give good results. Though not cheap they would be less expensive than a phone upgrade.

I was impressed with the features, but I also carry my camera everywhere I go. I do tend to use the iPhone for videos when I want to quickly record something. I haven't updated in awhile so this one I will try.

I have an Android smartphone. I will admit that Android is more likely to get a virus than an iPhone. Despite anti-virus aps you can download. Apple takes security measures to prevent most viruses/malware from entering their iPhones. This new 3 eyed iPhone appears to be a potential good seller. I use my smartphone primarily for communications and information. At my age, I'm not overenthusiastic about taking selfies as the youth like to do. Teenagers do get full use of their cell phones. Using virtually every features on them. Perhaps some adults do so too. Talk, texting, cameras, games, and using aps. Why not improve the cell phone cameras, if it will be the only camera that you will own? Just about everyone owns a smartphone or iPhone.. Not everyone owns a DSLR, Bridge, or a compact sized/pocket camera. I own all three. I don't use my smartphone camera at all. But, if an important situation arises, and I don't have my Sony pocket camera on me. I'll have to use my smartphone camera. Advantage, my Sony pocket camera has a focal range to 200mm. My smartphone does not have that range. Good for Apple they can continue to market their products. I got an email from Best Buy Store, that Samsung have new Smartphones out, as well as this new iPhone mentioned. None of them are cheap. And, parents are buying them for their teenaged sons and daughters. Which means that many customers have the money to spend for themselves and their kids. Good.

DXOMark ranks phone cameras based on testing. Ten android phones are ranked higher than Apple. Have to see how the new one does. https://www.dxomark.com/category/smartphone-reviews/

Just another Tool in the box for me . Not the first thing I grab when I want to photograph something but certainly a possible back-up device in a pinch I suppose.

You didn't mention any model numbers or prices for these 3 items. What do they cost in comparison to a lesser I-phone or a plain ordinary flip-phone? I would guess that they approach the cost of a bridge camera or a point & shoot version on today's market.

They certainly lighten the load and take up virtually no space in that regard. I wouldn't take an expensive phone abroad when I can buy a $10 throw-away in country when I arrive .....use it and lose it when I leave. Smart travelers don't carry any more than is necessary on any given day when they are faced with long walks in strange places and they do try to lighten their loads . An adequate phone and a pocket camera with adjustable focal length is all one needs. What he or she spends to achieve that is another issue and none of my concerns.

The cheapest new iPhone, the 11, starts at $699, or $399 with trade in. This model only has 2 lenses, not the 3 lenses on the other models.

As you relate, there are less expensive options. The latest and greatest sometimes costs more.

Yes, it's amazing how far cell phones have come in a few years. Many people select their phone based on the camera. I use a Samsung Galaxy J3 with TracPhone. It cost $59, and it's a typical smartphone. It's cost me a little over $13/month for the past four years.

Thanks for commenting...you will have a better iPhone camera setup than many people, including me.

If only our camera usage was as heavily subsidized as the phone market, we'd only have to rent the service for a monthly fee!! To that end, I read an article just the other day, seems that even a moderate cellular user will spend many tens of thousands of dollars for the luxury of the phones during their lifetime. If you have many family members in your plan it goes up from there (the cheapest advertisement I've seen for 4 people is the $100 per month family plan - Cricket I think) even that would be $24K in 20 years No wonder so many folks don't have enough money, they are spending a fortune on phones/services - it is a slick business model, sort of akin to vampirism.....

On the performance side, yes they are getting better and better, easy to use, and if you do make a bad pic, just blame the phone anyway!!

This entire thread is very interesting. There are so many different thoughts and things being said here..more than just about a new phone being introduced. My impressions:
Members of this site are photographers. We use cameras for our work or our hobby. There are many different tools and accessories we can choose from to enhance our photographic work. Phones with cameras will not replace our cameras and lenses.
Phones are for communication..immediate communication with others. This is their primary function. Manufacturers have added features in order to sell more phones to the public.
Not one person buys a phone for any other purpose than being able to talk with someone. They don't buy it because they want to play games, cruise the internet, or take pictures. They buy it to speak with others.
The phone manufacturers, like any product manufacturer, need to differentiate their products in order to outsell their competitors. This is where the bells and whistles come into play. One major by-product is clearly the improvement of integrated cameras. This technology has opened up another opportunity for phone mfgs. And that is....
What if 'I' want to use my phone as a camera instead of buying a separate camera? Clearly this strategy is working. Just look at the trend of camera sales over the last 10 years.
But let's be clear...it is still a phone and would not be purchased if it didn't operate as a phone!
It's not about the money. It's not about the evolving technology...most, if not all phone purchasers could care less about the camera technology.
We, as a group, are declining and will continue to decline in numbers as camera technology continues to improve. People who were/are on the edge about needing a camera to take 'good' pictures will buy new phones. Professionals and hobbyists will continue to buy new cameras. Age is not the issue here. It is only a fact. Why would anyone, no matter what age, who doesn't own a camera...and has no desire to be a professional, purchase a camera and lenses when they have a phone that does what they need? It is not about cost..it is about convenience, and the corresponding learning curve. Convenience trumps all.
And to put an exclamation point on it all.....what stock do you own? what stock would you purchase? I would not purchase the stock of a company that relies predominately on sales of cameras and lenses.
So, in the end.....we are not dinosaurs; but a group that uses cameras and lenses for our work or hobby. And, I for one, will upgrade my iPhone 7+ because I can, and will use the camera as an adjunct for my needs. i.e. When I do a project (construction) I take all of my pre and in-process photos with my iPhone. I use my camera for the final result.
Enjoy what you have and what you use...this is not about us...we members looking to replace our cameras with a new phone.

A pro on this forum gets satisfactory prints to 16x24 from an iPhone 7 if that’s an indicator.

I'm not sure I agree with everything you said. I use texting and internet and email far more than actual calling. Texting a photo is useful in work and play situations. Breaking news popping up in notifications is worthwhile. And to have a quality camera always in your pocket? You never know when the opportunity arises, especially special moments at social occasions when you are not saddled with a large camera around your neck.

I haven't discounted what you use it for; I just didn't need to go into everything that the phone can do. The fact you use it for texting is only another form of communication. My kids don't answer the phone, but they do respond to texts. Clearly you have your phone to communicate with others...the camera is bonus. And the use of the phone for these opportunities is also a bonus. If you are being paid to photograph a special occasion; you are not using your phone in lieu of a camera.
We don't disagree at all.

Phone cameras usually have a crop factor of 7x. My iPhone 7 has an actual focal length of 3.99 mm; this gives it a full frame equivalent focal length of about 28mm per the How-to Geek website I looked at. The telephoto crop factor may be different.

Apparently each camera has a typical small sensor of 1 x 2.5” or close to it.

I will look forward to reviews of actual photos on how these lenses perform.

Some listed camera sensor sizes (many don't list that info);
1. Panasonic Lumix CM1 _____________________ 1"

2. Nokia Pureview 808 _______________________ 1/1.2"

3. Nokia N8 __________________________________ 1/1.8"

4. Google Pixel / Pixel + ______________________ 1/2.3"

5. Nokia Lumia 1520 _________________________ 1/2.5"

Here are some camera highlights:

1. 2 models with 3 prime lenses:
13mm Ultra Wide.120 degree field of view
26 mm Wide. Optical Image Stabilization
52 mm Telephoto. f/2.0

2. 1 model with just the 13mm and 26mm lenses.

3. Night mode delivers natural low-light shots automatically.

This post is meant for those with an interest in getting a new iPhone. I now use an iPhone 7. I can see how one of the new iPhones would be good to have. I certainly could have used it on my recent trip to Glacier National Park.

I have an iPhone X. (It's not named iPhone 10). The greatest lack for the pictures I typically take is a longer lens. An equivalent 52mm field of view does not qualify as a "telephoto." I would upgrade to an iPhone 11 Pro Max if Apple had chosen to make the third lens a telephoto rather than a wide angle. As someone else has said, one can just do a panorama if a wide angle is desired. Huawei Pro 30 also has three lenses and one of them has an equivalent field of view of 125mm. It does everything the new iPhone does and does it better (night mode, etc.) and cheaper. It's too bad that the people in Washington have decided to punish China by banning Huawei.
