It always strikes me, while reading a post that strikes my interest, why there are those of us on this site that seek to shut down someone's question about any topic that may have been discussed on UHH before with the suggestion to go and "Search" it out because, God forbid, it was brought up for discussion before? I don't know about anyone else, but if I am not interested in anyone's particular discussion topic or question, I don't open it up and start reading it. To those of you who are suggesting that any topic that has been previously discussed, and are not interested in it, then why are you opening up that question or topic to read it in the first place??? Are we not allowed to talk about anything further once it has been previously discussed? Is there nothing left to be said on said question or topic? Photography topics are unending from the most basic to the most complex and yes, they do come up for discussion, all over the internet, over and over again. Of course, probably a lot of the topics have been talked about here before to one degree or another. All I am saying is if someone doesn't bring up a question because it has been previously talked about, then those of us who might not have been aware of the question, or ever thought about it, might find the question interesting, and never would have thought about it had it not been brought up for discussion once again.

I'm not sure what you mean or which side of any argument
you're upholding .... but I most strenuously disagree !!!!!

If someone knows of a prior post that is highly pertinent to the same subject or question as a new thread, it is both helpful & (possibly) less confrontational to post something along the lines of: "There is some helpful discussion of this matter at (link)."

There is no point to having three versions of the ‘same discussions’ at the same time ..... better to have the participants talking to each other ...... but some posters seem to be too lazy to check for duplication.

And some commentators who have found the 2nd thread are too lazy to supply a link to tthat thread.

This forum's "Watched" list does that. But only for those with it on their watched list.

When a new comment is added to any topic, no matter how old, that topic goes back to the top of the list in that forum. All the forums are sorted with most recent addition at the top.

Internet users, PLEASE learn how to use search engines and search tools. Your life will be better for it, with greatly enhanced independence and freedom, and knowledgeable mavens everywhere will have more time to respond to your questions of a deeper nature.

Read The *Fine* Manual, too. It can’t hurt, even if it doesn’t make sense the first or second time. As the brilliant 20th Century composer, Frank Zappa once said, “Go to the public library and educate yourself.”

If that’s somehow abrasive or offensive, it certainly isn’t meant as such. It’s meant as a constructive reminder that learning requires a certain amount of active participation and personal responsibility.

And this is easily handled.

If you have already commented on this in a way that you feel is adequate you can a) not bother with the new thread or b) (if you really think what you said was that useful and responsive) provide a link to the thread. There are actually several users who do that. I assume they keep a list in a file somewhere or in bookmarks.

What is not helpful, useful or productive is to dismissively shoot out a rude "google it you lazy SOB" type reply.

I fully agree. Now, if we had a search function that would check the body of replies instead of just the Title, then it would be substantially easier to find previous discussions. Until users start putting details in the headings, the search function fails miserably.

As mentioned [with instructions] above and randomly for quite a while now it is east to search the content of UHH threads by using Google.

Specifics in the title would help the search function a lot. More specifics in the original post would help to keep the thread on track and avoid hijacking.

You know what I mean. An OP along the lines of "Which is better an 18-55 lens or a 10-22?" Two pages later we find out the OP wants a lens to shoot sporting events indoors and is using an APS-C camera. But by then the thread has degenerated into landscape photography issues and how many lines of resolution slide film used to give you in 1965.

Just as you're not required to read the post, you're also not required to answer again.
