There are many reasons to buy a new or refurb D810 vs a D850. Firstly the file sizes (NEF) on the D850 and much larger and will require more space on the memory cards, next the sensor has about 25% more megapixels and IQ will be affected (or not optimized) when using Nikkor AI-s or Nikkor AF glass. Even some of the older AFS lenses will exhibit less than ideal IQ on the D850. The pixel density of the D850 is such that small camera movements will result in motion blur when handholding the camera. This is where VRII comes in, so if you don’t have stabilized lenses you might not get the best IQ without a tripod, or very fast shutter speeds. I opted for a D810 so I could use my CF cards which in my opinion are more durable and stable than SD cards. I bought a used body from a local dealer (15K activations) in January 2016 for C$2700 and have NEVER had one regret.

I think you made one comment in your post that approaches reality, " The pixel density of the D850 is such that small camera movements will result in motion blur when handholding the camera" Approaches because your inference is that the camera causes the motion blur when it only makes it more apparent. As is always the case the motion blur is a result of technique. As to your comments about old glass, using them on a D850 does affect their IQ at all. That would be an impossibility. They are what they are and the D850 will reveal both their good and their bad. Image IQ of the D850 is not negatively affected by the pixel density, only the operator needs to be more exacting with their work habits.

Does anyone know if the Nikon D810 is still being made? If yes, who carries them?

Listed on B&H but if not available look for a refurbished body on the used section on bh or Nikon USA.

I am looking at a D810 to go with my D800. Mpb.com has good prices on used units that include a capture count so you can choose what you want. I am not connected to them but bought a mb-d12 that was rated good and came looking brand new. Happy with them.

Owning both a D800e and a D850 I can confidently advise that if the budget allows it, go for the D850, you'll never regret it.

Backordered on Nikon and B&H websites.

$2000.

But why bother with a D810 new, when you can get a decent used one for around $1200, or get an even nicer D850 refurb for around $2400?

That is true, and, in addition, a Nikon EN-EL18c battery, that allows the D850 to obtain 9 frames a second, is NOT available for the Nikon D810.

No, the D810 has been completely replaced by the D850. However, there are some D810’s still in some vendor’s inventory. Recently I bought a “Nikon Refurbished D810” from Adorama and am very happy with it.

The only FX DSLR’s that Nikon still produces are the D5, D850, D750, and the D610.

Actually only the D850 is currently in production. D5 ceased production in June of 2018. D750 stopped in April 2019 and D610 stopped in August 2018.
D5 and Df production lines in Sendai, Japan were converted to produce the Z7 and Z6 bodies respectively.

That is probably true. But, Nikon is still actively marketing those four cameras on their website.

Out of production does not mean "discontinued". That won't happen until replacement models are introduced. They will be sold as long as inventories exist.
