This is an informal survey to see if enough people would be interested in a forum devoted to mirrorless cameras. It would have several purposes such as discussing gear and methods, comparing models, exchanging tips and tricks, and educating those who might want to change to mirrorless.

Post whether you think this would be worthwhile or not.

I wouldn't.
Since this is a blog about photography, not about specific camera types, I think it would be detrimental to the exchange of information and ideas to separate mirrorless cameras. I haven't seen many (if any) photography discussions that pertained solely to one type.

Last week it was a separate forum for bridge cameras. Bridge cameras are mirrorless cameras. What next, a forum for black body only cameras!? How about a forum for fixed lens cameras of a certain focal length? What about 30X plus cameras or how about cameras made specifically in Japan!? How about one for cameras that take photographs and one for cameras that capture images?!
Why is there a need to have separate forums delineated by camera characteristics? After all, don't they all pretty much do the same thing? Record photographs?!

I have DSLR and mirrorless. Full frame and APS-C. Interchangeable lens and fixed lens. Black body and silver body. It could get confusing.

Do they take different pictures? Do they take pictures differently? Do they use an exposure tetrahedron?

I thought we covered everything about mirrorless earlier this year? Myths about mirrorless cameras

Good questions. However, products change, ideas change and newcomers join the discussion. The area is changing and this forum could keep people current. Does this change your mind?

The mirrorless migration would probably falter if we took mirrorless commentaries out of the mainstream. Either that, or it would increase the "ostrichity" of both types of users... They'd crawl into their own caves on opposite sides of the watering hole (2001: A Space Odyssey reference).

It would be like putting all the conservatives on Fox, and all the liberals on NPR + PBS. Oh, wait... That's actually happened! See where THAT got us?

I agree about avoiding polarization. However, a new forum could help explore ideas in greater depth as is the case in many of the other groups. This would not preclude people from posting in the main discussion group.

I think it would serve more as a mirrorless fan club than a camera information forum.

That may be but I have yet hear someone going from mirrorless back to mirror. I am not looking for a fan club but a thoughtful exchange of ideas.

What would be the point?

Camera technology changes - slowly - overtime. Most of my cameras are SLRS / DSLRS but I do have a mirrorless camera. Many people already have difficulty posting things in the appropriate sections whether they are images or computer questions or political rants.

Wouldn't it make UHH further Balkanized and more difficult to access? We already have some significant contributors leaving UHH. Would this add value or detract value from UHH?

UGG must have at least 20 groups already and they are not of comparable quality or following. You do not know how a mirrorless forum would fare unless you try it.

NO, I don't think so. I own both types of cameras and I just don't see that one is that much different from the other. Also, it doesn't matter how many forums you have, everyone will just keep posting their snapshots in this one!

I agree with your snapshot comment.

UHH already has closely related groups on street photography, criticism, and closeup/macro to cite a few examples. It does not have anything comparable to mirrorless.

I'm not sure what you mean. Your examples pertain photography not camera type. And any type of camera can be included in those examples.

What would photography be without cameras?

Groups overlap and you cannot draw clean lines between them. Secondly, certain groups such as closeup, macro, astrophography, and portraiture are as much about equipment as they are about the photos themselves. The post-processing discussion is often more about software than pictures themselves. In other words, it is all about photography, the science, the art, the technology.

Yes, about equipment, but not restricted to a particular camera type. For True Macro Photography you need a 1:1 Macro lens but they can be had for just about any camera type.

I'm not going to keep going back and forth with you on this. If you want to start a forum on UHH fine. I wish you luck. One thing you need to consider, with all the replies you have gotten, how many have indicated interest in a mirrorless forum?
