If you think like that you'll never buy a new camera as there is always something coming out to replace it.

IF, and that is a big IF, Nikon produces a Z5, and IF it is designed as a crop sensor camera, Nikon MIGHT bring out an adapter that will allow all of your current DX lenses to work off it.
There is no sense giving this any thought until a cropped sensor Z comes out.
Billnikon, you are correct, guess I got anxious along with GAS and really don't know exactly what I want. I am going to give it a little time, most of my shooting time for this year is past and I will be really busy for the next couple of months. Thanks for your comments, you always give solid advise!

There are times waiting can pay off unless there is an immediate need. It appears you do not have that pressure. The D500 is very old technology in today's camera world and is likely reaching an end of life cycle soon.
Nikon is going Z and likely will do a replacement for the D500 in the Z mount. As old as the D500 is I personally would wait as it does seem that you are not under pressure to just blow money.
Work with what you have, I am sure it still is better than you are and has features you have not used or perhaps still do not understand. As far as IQ what you have is still a premium quality camera.

Thanks, you are right on target. Old technology is my stumbling block. I don't need the super fast focus of the D500 because I am not into birds or sports. I really like the eye focus of the Z6 and the FF detail that it can provide but that starts me on a new collection of lens. Would love a happy middle ground but am starting to think that may be a pipe dream. I appreciate your comment!

You will be able to mount old lenses just the old screw drive will not work. I am sure that new Z lenses will come out with lower prices.

I own a D500 and a Z6 (for one week and one day) among my other cameras. With any technology, the longer you wait, the better it will be, BUT, you will not be able to accurately determine exactly how long you will wait. The D500, IMHO, is Nikon's finest crop frame camera and I consider it the little brother of the D5. You already own a D7xxx so ALL your lenses will work just fine on a D500, and they will work on a crop frame Mirrorless, I would suppose. In my short time as a Z system owner I have really taken a liking to the Z specific lenses and I do plan to expand my kit in that direction. It's not that I am unhappy with the adapter FTZ, it's just I see many advantages of the Native lens system. Me, I'd buy the D500 in a snap. You?? Best of luck.

If Nikon were to make the APS-C cameras in Z mount. It can certainly uses the same lenses as the Z6 plus some new Z lenses for the APS-C format. It too can use the F mount lenses with the FTZ. When this camera came out you can still buy the D500.

I have followed this rule for years. Even when I plan on adding a new body, I just wait at least 1 year after it has been out. By doing this I have always purchased a new Nikon that has the latest Firmware downloaded on it. Plus, one can wait and see if there are any recalls such as the D610 with oil spots on the sensors and even the D750 had a recall when it came out. I waited to buy my D500 and my D750 for 1 year after they came out. I plan on adding a D850 now as it has finally passed my waiting period.

The Z5 isn't Nikon's replacement for the D500, they are two completely different cameras. The Z5 is a mirrorless full frame and the D500 is a crop sensor DSLR. What they told you is a good idea, the D500 is more closely related to your D7100 than the Z5 is.

How can you make these statements. There are only two Nikon Z cameras, the Z7 and the Z6, and they are both full frames. There is no Z5 and no reliable rumors. It is expected that Nikon may come out with another 'budget' Z sometime soon, but not as of yet. Best of luck.
You didn’t go for the z6-z7? Why, but you thinking about z5...... an upgrade from 7100 to the 500 is for sure a great update. Good luck for whatever you decide
I regularly read nikonrumors.com and have been reading about the potential of Nikon putting out a APS-C mirrorless camera. I am a hobbyist who enjoys shooting birds in flight, so for me the D500 is a no-brainer. Even though it has been around for a while now, it still has an outstanding focusing system, a huge buffer, is built like a professional camera, and will likely last me for many, many years. I was very close to buying the Z6 when they were announced last year, but opted instead to buy the heavily discounted D750, to go along with my D500, and have not regretted my decision. Certainly there are advantages to going mirrorless, but buying a mirrorless camera will not make me a better photographer, learning about light, composition, and other factors that determine a good photograph, will. At some point I will likely buy a mirrorless camera, but it will take a lot to pry the D500 out of my hands anytime soon.
The D500 isn't a FF camera.
