I tend to doubt that a crop sensor Nikon mirrorless is that much a priority with Nikon since DX glass is less expensive and used more by hobbyists, etc. The higher prices for FF glass that advanced users have is a much greater investment that Nikon should be motivated to protect.

So what are the stats on hobbyists vs advanced users with Nikon cameras? I see a lot of posts here from 3000 and 5000 series cameras.

I was only trying to make the point about the investment in glass. Nikon (prior to the Z series) was very good about making newer bodies that could use older legacy glass. If you're on of those people who has a lot of FF investment in glass, some running into 5 figures, you would not remain a Nikon fan if this glass becomes expensive paperweights.

If you are using that FF glass on a DX dslr, most would work equally well on a mirrorless DX Nikon with the FTZ adapter. If you were using DX lenses 'my guess' is that they will work on a DX "Z" body with the adapter.

The adapter is nothing more that a spacer with pass through electrical contacts.

MT Shooter, DJ750, TBerwick Thanks for your comments and self help questions. I have to admit I read that a new Z was coming out to lead the DX cameras and I thought it was the Z5 and the high end was to be the Z8 but as Steve wrote, it is vaporware at this point. With my shooting style (people, stationary item etc.) the Z6 may be most appropriate but I did not want to start 2 collections of lens and for that I was going to go with the D500. I may just get the D500 which would surely meet my needs and then the search or question of what next is settled! Many thanks you really do help me to level set!

It sounds as though maybe you have the money to purchase any camera you like but you can get good used D500 At a reasonable price at some of the better retailers.
