Question a Z replacement for the Nikon D500

I asked about a new camera (FF) to go with my D7100 a month back and it was suggested I get the D500 so that all my lens would be interchangeable. Reluctantly, I have agreed, then I read that a Z5 may be coming to replace the D500. If that is true, would you expect that a new series of Z lens would also accompany it. If so, I need to get the D500 now or lose my advantage of lens use however, I hate to purchase 3 or 4 year old technology if something possibly better is on the brink of introduction. Choices, choices and choices!

Get what you need now. Unless it’s actually announced, it’s vaporware.

A bird in the hand is worth more than a colony on Mars! (or something like that), rumors are called that for a reason!

Only Nikon knows their production schedule. There is no APS-C “Z” body right now nor do I recall seeing one in the Nikon roadmap thru 2020.

I cannot tell you what to do but below are some questions that I suggest you give some thought to:

Why do you want a FF body?

You mention the Z series. Do you want to change to mirrorless format?
If so why are you bothering with another DSLR body?

If you really want a FF body why are you re-considering buying another DX body?

Do you have an existing set of APS-C (DX) lenses you like?
That is a good reason to stick with the DX format. Nikon DX lenses will work on a FF (FX) body but they will vignette on a FF sensor. You can select DX mode, but then you will suffer some loss of resolution. These are the the trades. Ultimately you will be buying a new set of FX lenses for your FX body. DSLR or mirrorless same problem.

The D500 is the most expensive APS-C DSLR. Do you do the type of shooting that will benefit from the features that the D500 offers, enough to justify the price?

Cameras are just like computers: no matter what you buy today, there will be something newer, faster, flashier, uses more gizmo's, whatever. Like Steve says above, buy what you can use now and move on. The Z series all have different mounts that the DX & FX lens series and if I were to buy a Z series camera, I would also start buying lenses for it.

I responded to your earlier inquiry that I also have the combo of D7100 & a newer D500. If I were to buy anything else at this point, it would be a D850. Just my 2 cents.

I just noticed that you seem to have equated the rumored "Z5" with the D500. This is not the correct comparison.

The rumored Z5 could provide a professional mirrorless version of the D5. The D5 is Nikon's top of the line professional DSLR. About $6K (Body only).

Steve, I guess I could fully agree with you. My problem is I don't have a "need" and all I shoot is for my own enjoyment. I wanted a FF to get better detail and for the eye focus because most of my photos are of people. I can hold off to see what is coming but there is still such a comfort value to having all my lens (not a record setting collection but about 8 that fit my needs) interchangeable. I would rather carry 2 cameras that one and multiple lens and have to change on the fly. I appreciate your comment.

They would have to improve the autofocus performance of the new Z mirrorless cameras a lot before I would purchase. I rented the Z6 for two weeks not long ago and did side by side testing with my D500. The D500's autofocus seems clearly superior.

If the rumor is true then you would wait? If so then wait.

MT Shooter, DJ750, TBerwick Thanks for your comments and self help questions. I have to admit I read that a new Z was coming out to lead the DX cameras and I thought it was the Z5 and the high end was to be the Z8 but as Steve wrote, it is vaporware at this point. With my shooting style (people, stationary item etc.) the Z6 may be most appropriate but I did not want to start 2 collections of lens and for that I was going to go with the D500. I may just get the D500 which would surely meet my needs and then the search or question of what next is settled! Many thanks you really do help me to level set!

You got my concern reversed, if the rumor is true "and" the new Z DX format would require a new type of lens I would not wait. I would only wait if I thought my current lens would work and that seems foolish at this point. Thanks for the comment.

There are lens adapters for the new z series cameras that would allow you to use your current lens collection. Financially you would probably be better off with the D500. Technology will always be advancing. That doesn't mean your current camera & lens can't take great pics anymore.
Whatever you decide, have fun.

I've never been one to wait for something that might be coming along. Life is too short and uncertain.

IF, and that is a big IF, Nikon produces a Z5, and IF it is designed as a crop sensor camera, Nikon MIGHT bring out an adapter that will allow all of your current DX lenses to work off it.
There is no sense giving this any thought until a cropped sensor Z comes out.
