Not another one who can’t work out that this is the chit chat section where anything that’s posted (within reason) gets discussed.

Dealer has been great with free servicing during past 2 years.
Went in for free state inspection yesterday at 29,000+ miles and they are suggesting the need for about $800 worth of work.
What's needed: climate control tune up ($180), brake system fluid exchange ($150), fuel injection service ($190) and front differential fluid replacement ($270); rear differential service is free.
My 2 previous vehicles, a 1994 Plymouth Voyager minivan & a 2005 Honda CRV went a combined 350,000 miles without requiring any of these services.
Looks like the dealer is trying to recoup his previous free services.
What is your opinion??

Time to find a reputable local mechanic. The term "stealership" was earned by most dealerships. New cars need less maintenance than the older cars of our youth. The truth is Toyota makes such a reliable car that they don't get many opportunities to make money on repairs.

This is what most dealerships do nowadays to create revenue. Most of that work you mentioned is unnecessary.

Look at your owners manual for your Toyota RECOMMENDED SERVICE and at what frequency these services are recommended.
Or simply ask the service writer to show you in your owners manual what is recommended.
Remember, very few vehicles require "heavy/rough service" frequencies of service unless you tow a trailer and/or live on or frequently travel on dirt roads.

These are fine things to do but not normally required especially with only 29,000 miles! Check with another dealer for the timing of such checks or activities.

Refer to your warranty and maintenance guide. There you will find the requirements to maintain the warranty. Page 42 has the 39k service.
Climate control tune up - cabin air filter. About 20 bucks. Do yourself or have someone do. It.. other option is remove it. It’s optional.

Brake system fluid exchange: Not on the list. Why are they recommending.?

Front differential fluid. Not on list unless you use the vehicle for towing or carrying heavy loads.

Fuel injection service: not on the list. It’s basically pouring a can of injector cleaner into the gas. Go to auto parts dealer and get a can of gum out fuel system cleaner. Cost is about 10 bucks. It’s a good idea to do every 5k or so.

I am a professional auto technician, have been for 47 years. And yes the cars of today are built so much better than yesteryear that they do not require the major services like they used to. On average, they do not break down very often. When they do it is usually very expensive. What they are trying to sell you is not required by Toyota or any car manufacturer. It is called survival. The technicians for the most part (at least in my case) have years of training, my toolbox consists of about $100,000 worth of tools at today's prices, and I have a family to support on dwindling customer base (hint, they build them better). I work for a dealer and I am of the old school. I recommend what is needed and the advisors tack on the rest. I am one of the higher paid and only get 15% of the labor charged.

Your throttle body does need cleaning from time to time because it does build up gunk on the throttle blade. Your brake fluid is in a closed system, but brake fluid will break down over time and will absorb moisture when the cap is off (sometimes I find a cap not on correctly). Some customers put the wrong type of fluid in the brake system that can do a lot of damage. Your differentials need fluid changing every so often only if you tow quite often (more the just a small trailer with a lawnmower). Your manufacturer has written in your owners manual what is necessary to maintain your vehicle for warranty purpose.

Have you ever known a Professional Photographer do a photoshoot for bare minimum cost? He should because you have a camera, you can do the same thing he does, and it only cost you the gas getting somewhere. Why in most cases do you go to a doctor, just take 2 aspirin and go see him/her in a few weeks, maybe. Why call an electrician, plumber, painter, roofer, the list goes on. Why can't you do it all yourself? HomeDepot can show you how if you don't know how allready.

I am not saying that a dealer in most cases is not a rip, you have a choice. You have a choice to not go to someone that knows your car better than anyone else (with the best parts), or you have the choice to just say NO to those extra items.

I have a 2013 Hyundai and the service should be similar. I just had the 30K deal done and they charged me only $200. There seems to be some things they want to do that don't need doing.

Here is another opiniion from Dr Internet.
The Toyota 30,000 Mile Service
Engine oil and filter change.
Tire rotation, pressure measurement, and inspection.
Door and hood hinge lubrication.
Propeller shaft, drive shaft bushings, and steering knuckle lubrication.
Engine air intake filter replacement and occupant air purification cleaning.
Complimentary car wash.
Nov 27, 2017

I don't see all those oil/fluid changes.

I have a 2012 Toyota Avalon with 158,000 miles on it and have never done any of those things to it. My previous Avalon went 350,000 and I never did any of those things. I think the dealer is taking you for a ride. All of those services are unnecessary at that mileage unless you are having a problem. They are high profit low cost to the dealer. If you are beyond the free service period find a reputable local wrench and stay away from the Stealership.

Never had any luck with the dealer. Every time I had an oil change, I think some bored employee sat in the car and played with all the buttons. After two hours with the manual trying to change these things back, I called and was told that "no one here has the faintest idea what they may have done". That was Toyota Kingsport, Tennessee
