I just ordered an SX40 and am confused about available batteries (NB-10L). I see a wide variety of prices and reviews for what seem to be the same third party battery - 7.4 V,1200mAh.
What is your experience with Canon's battery (920mAh) and with third party batteries?

If you purchase generic batteries, be sure to. purchase a generic charger. The Canon charger does not charge all generic batteries, there are a few that it will but it is hard to tell from the listings.

I purchased 4 extra batteries, and a generic charger. The first generic charger was junk, it got extremely hot. Purchased one from a different source and it works great with the "Canon" brand as well as the generic ones.

Have also used the Canon charger with all of my generic batteries and have had no problems. However, I did not get the CHEAPEST of the generics, paid close to $10 ea for the batteries.

Some people seem to report problems with third party batteries like swelling up in the camera and not being able to remove them. I suspect that the quality control on these batteries is not always up to par. I have always preferred the camera manufactures batteries even if they cost a little more. The batteries if they fail, your day is done for photography.

I agree with donrent = bought 2 spare third party batteries for 19.75 GBP as compared to 49.99 for one canon genuine at Jessops UK. - batteries perform as well as the original.

I use Sony and bought the cheap copies which worked well but did not last as long the genuine article so I only use genuine Sony now because they are the best and are made specially for my camera.

I bought an aftermarket battery from www.bestbatt.com (NB-10L) and have no issues with the charger or battery. I also noticed it is a 1200 mAp vs 900 which is what it came with. Cost $10.

The SX 40 manual refers to "battery swelling" as being normal for their batteries. Therefore this is known to Canon and should be no problem unless it swells to the point of binding.

The swelling and binding problem was a long discussion on this site a little while ago. It caused a big problem for the poster. It was a very warm period when it happened and this may have contributed to the problem.

I know you are asking about the SX40, but I bought off brand batteries for my 40d and they work just as well as the Canon one I got with it. For a heck of a lot less money. I say go for it. Cheers.

Since we are on the SX40, has anyone used the Raynox DCR 150 Macro and if so what settings did you set the SX40 on? Sorry for getting off batteries.

Like most of us, I'd like to buy a back up battery for my SX40 at the cheapest price, yet provide me with decent service. Has anyone made comparisons of generic batteries with the official Canon one, such as overall battery life (i.e., how many times can it be recharged before the number of pix it will take on a charge is greatly reduced), how many pix does one get from one charging on average, etc. Thanks.

So far my aftermarket versions (1200ma and higher) last close to double the original. It is hard to put a number on the life because it lasts so long I forget to keep track of how many shots versus how many times I am reviewing all the shots on the card using the LCD, etc, and I use the LCD 90% of the time when shooting....

Thank you both. Your experience certainly is encouraging. Wow, think of the mark up Canon and/or Best Buy must put on their "official" battery with the $59 price our local Best Buy outlet quoted me yesterday!
