Some will tell you that 12 GB of DRAM is not nearly enough. I disagree. While I have no camera that produces a RAW file greater than 30 MBytes, I do create files much larger than that when I do panoramas and my desktop, which has 16 GB, has no problem processing them. Even my laptops, none of which have more than 8 GB of DRAM seem to handle fairly large files without burping. If you do a Google search, you will find many complaints from Luminar users about the slowness of the application. As suggested by another contributor, download the trial versions of Photoshop and Lightroom. And if you can, ask one of your photo colleagues to put the applications through their paces on your laptop. Given the trial period is only 30 days, it is unlikely that you will be able to learn enough about the programs to give them a proper evaluation. However, putting the hardware/software in somebody's hands that already know the programs should give you nearly instant confirmation if this is the answer to your problems. Good luck and please report back to us.

You can use Photoshop on two computers under your Adobe subscription license. I've been doing so for years.

Photoshop Creative Cloud comes with Photoshop (the photo editor), Adobe Camera Raw, Bridge, and Lightroom.

The Adobe subscription also comes with a downloader named "Adobe Creative Cloud." The subscription communicates through it for periodic updates and upgrades.

Yes, you may wish to attend a workshop in photo editing using Photoshop. It will give you a foundation and some confidence. You can also learn a lot from online tutorials and essays.

I am considering moving from Luminar 3 to a Creative Cloud subscription. I see that I would get Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. I believe that with a lot of training I would be better off than with Luminar. My question is with license. If I subscribe would I be able to use the software on two different computers, a PC and a MacBook Pro or would the license limit my download to just one device? My reason for change is because when I was editing a 24 meg file off my d750 I had no problem, sense my purchase of a d850 the large file size is choking Luminar to a slug pace. Thanks

I went from a D7100 to a D850 and I have a iPad Air 2 iPhone 7 and a iMac late 2008 and never had a problem editing the raw files from the D7100 but all my devices struggled to edit from the D850. But when I lowered the raw settings just one step down from the highest it solved my problem. Now I can edit them just as easily as the D7100. Hope this helps.
And I can’t really tell the difference I quality just the file size.

With the subscription you can load the software on multiple computers. I do not think there is a limit but you can only run it on two computers and 1 mobile device at the same time. So if you have 6 computers you can download the software on all of them. But you can only choose 2 to be “active” at a time. I have it loaded on 3 computers, my phone and my IPad. In the CC app under settings I have to check which 2 computers are active which I can change at any time. I also have to choose which mobile device is active at any given time. I usually keep my phone active but can change it to my IPad at any time. Cross platform does not matter so you can run one on your PC and one on your Mac. I am not positive but I do not think you can have the software open on two computers at the same time however. Meaning you can’t have lightroom open on your MAC and PC at the same time one has to be closed. But I have never tried. I have had it open on my laptop and iPad at the same time however.

This is a hardware problem not a software problem. The issue is the amount of ram is not big enough to handle the larger D850 files. Lightroom eats up a lot of ram. The larger the files the more ram. They say 8 is the minimum ram but I think you need 16 or more for it to run with larger files to prevent slow downs. If you can increase your ram you should not have to decrease raw file size. If you can’t than your solution is the only work around.

12GB should be ok but now I have concerns about the drive that is only 1TB.

While this looks like plenty of space having a single drive creates access issues when it is used as a swap drive for any software using it - this includes PS CC by the way.

I have a D850 with plenty of memory (128GB) and an i7 3.5GHz CPU. Accessing a D850 raw file is a pain, even using a dedicated SSD. Once opened I have no issue. I am currently working on a PSD file created with 5 D850 raw files. The PSD file uses 82GB. CPU usage varies between 50% and 20% and the memory is stable at 29GB with 92.x Cached (to disk).

Our cat friend (TriX) is right, open the task manager and check the CPU usage first, the memory usage then the disk usage. I would also check the GPU usage. Any abnormal repeated peak may give you a serious clue about the issue you are having. Do this BEFORE purchasing anything as spending $$$ recklessly is never a good idea.

Not true. You can install the programs on as many computers as you like but can only run two at a time.

The 1TByte disk is probably on the small side these days. My photopile currently takes up 1.6 TBytes. And I have other stuff on my computers.

You might consider keeping those files that constitute the bulk of your data volume on an external drive. The advantage is that if it fills up, you can get a larger one easily, copy the files over, and connect the new drive, making sure to rename it with the same drive name. That will allow LR (if that's your choice of software) to seamlessly handle the larger drive.

Whatever, you probably want some large external drives anyway to handle archives.

Thanks for the suggestion dirtfarmer. I do have both a 2 and a 4 Tbyte external drive that I have been using to backup my files.
