Reports of focus and focus tracking problems have haunted the Z7 since it's introduction. Rumor has it that firmware is due to correct it.
That said I own and shoot the D850, I know it's focus system is outstanding. Nikon put a separate focus engine in it and the D500 and D5. I think the D850 is the best Nikon camera ever. Rumor has it that a firmware due later this summer will give the D850 eye focus priority.
If it were me, and it was, I choose the D850, and that has made all the difference.
That said, mirrorless camera's have advantages, the two biggest are, no lens calibration is ever needed AND, you see what you are going to get exposure wise before you shoot, two really big game changers in my opinion.
I would strongly suggest you call Nikon to see if they have fixed the Z7 with a firmware update. If they have, I would then go with the Z7.
However, the lens line for the Z7 is still very limited, you must use an adapter to get other Nikon lenses attached. Personally I do not like adding anything between the lens and the camera.
Good luck on your decision.
