Loc: Houston suburb
Long story but I have a free condo there for 8 days next month. I’ve never been there. Driving from Houston. Any suggestions as to opportunities for photography there , along the way and or things to do.
White Sands National Monument is about an hour’s drive - can be quite worthwhile, particularly if you go early before the dunes are riddled with footprints and buttprints (from folks sledding down on plastic saucers) - it’s also much cooler then before heating up later in the day.

Go to Roswell and photograph the storming of Roswell. Yes, there is a group that will storm by force Area 51. You should go, the group says it is not afraid, they say they can "outrun bullets". YOU could get some great shots of this, and, maybe, just maybe, get a shot of all the aliens that are stored there. YOU could become famous, if you can outrun bullets. GOOD LUCK.

Ah, but Area 51 is in Nevada - are
you that dense?
That said, Roswell (NM) is rather a disappointment - other than some cheesy alien-themed gift shops and an Alien museum there’s not much going for it…certainly nothing particularly photogenic.
Google Maps would be a good way to find out. I turned in the terrain layer and there were were, besides the map, a good set of photos, including Fort Stanton northeast of Ruidoso, which looks interesting. Trip Advisor shows a horse museum and a few other areas that might be photogenic.
Hope this helps more than the Roswell nuts.
Ruidoso, NM is well known for the annual auction of the best racing quarter horses in the US. There are always many beautiful animals - and people there. The auction lasts a few days, but the surrounding countryside offers photo ops as well - some cacti, a variety of small wildflowers that varies with rainfall and time of year, and semi-resert scenes that are highly photogenic..
I don't recall the date of the auction though, but it's somewhere around this time of year.

Valley of Fires a little north and west of Ruidoso, and old lava flow from a volcano approximated 75 miles north of that site. Do a Google maps search with Valley of the Fires as your title, not far away.
Also, even the town of Ruidoso is a neat artsy crafty settlement. You won't be bored or for loss of subjects to photograph, just looking at the other replies brings back many memories.

In Ruidoso you'll find the quarter horse race track (racing Fri,Sat,Sun &? Mon), and casino. I think there are 3 casinos all together in Ruidoso. There are many entertainment and dining spots in town. In the summer time "Ski Apache" has one of the longest zip lines in the world. (If your up to that kind of thing)
Ruidoso is not far from Lincoln NM historic site, Billie the Kid and the Lincoln county wars. Also Fort Stanton(S?) historic site. White Sands isn't too far. Carlsbad is about a 2.5 hour drive if you enjoy exploring caves.
Ruidoso elevation is about 7000 so you'll enjoy the climate vs Houston. The area itself is quite photogenic
Go to Monjeau Lookout. Quite the Vista;
https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lincoln/recarea/?recid=80034Also, a good day trip would be the Three Rivers Petroglyphs.
You're not too far from the Hubbard Museum and the Billy the Kid Museum.
As others have noted, White Sands National Park isn't far away and if you stand the warmth, their Sunset Tour is a must do. If you happen to be there during a full moon they also offer a Lunar Tour.
A walk down Ruidoso's streets will give you some photo opps as well. Early morning or late afternoon drives on back canyon roads should give you some wildlife pops as well.
This website is a great source for most everything New Mexico.
https://www.newmexico.org/You won't have to go far to find great photo opportunities. I spend most of my time in Northern New Mexico when we travel, but I have heard the Cloudcroft area is a must see. Also, there is a great Pistachios farm (Heart of the desert) in Alamogordo, and don't forget about the Green Chiles, they will be in season in just a couple of weeks. Enjoy!
