Long story but I have a free condo there for 8 days next month. I’ve never been there. Driving from Houston. Any suggestions as to opportunities for photography there , along the way and or things to do.
Carlsbad Caverns is a must in Southern New Mexico.

Hubbard Museum of the American West.
Absolutely fascinating.
Agree with the other suggestions.
I don't think that there is a flat spot in town it seems.
It must be those damn extraterrestrials again.

Does that now include the Museum of the Horse from Patagonia AZ?

I do not believe so seeing as the Museum of the Horse is associated with Anne Stradling and part of her chain of ranches.

The space museum in Alamogordo is very interesting and well worth the visit.

Take a look at The Inn of the Mountain Gods, a casino/resort on the Apache reservation just outside of Ruidoso. Beautiful location and setting; rather scenic.
Ride the chair lift to the 11,000 ft point then finish on foot to the 12,000 ft top of Sierra Blanca. Walk down following the main trail watching for flowers, finches, and marmots above timberline. But do go early, afternoon showers are just about a daily occurrence during summer monsoons and you can get very confused walking downhill in the thick fog. If you head down the wrong drainage, you've got a long walk to find your car in the parking lot at the start of the chair lift. Don't skimp on the water and have an emergency rain jacket in your pocket.

If you are into history, Ruidoso is in the heart of Billy the Kid territory. Get a current book about him and the Lincoln county wars and follow his escapades and the political corruption.
Lincoln and White Oaks are two well preserved "ghost" towns. White Oaks is home of the famous No Scum Allowed Saloon and Lincoln, I believe, is a National Historic Monument. Neither is a tourist trap. Lincoln is mostly museums in old buildings.

Thanks.
We had gone to Patagonia in '92 just to visit the museum (why else would you go there?), it was closed with a sign on the door saying it was moving to
Ruidoso. About a year or so later we were in Ruidoso and thought to check it out.
Yup, it was closed.
Cloudcroft as someone else mentioned is worth the drive up the mountain and the ghost town of White Oaks has a lot of photographic opportunities. Be sure to visit the No Scum Allowed saloon while in White Oaks.
@fantom. I should have read the rest of the posts before I posted. I see you've been to the No Scum Allowed saloon too. Great place for a cold beer on a hot day.
I have been coming to Ruidoso for years...lots of photo opportunities. There is a small town just down the mountain on hwy 37 to Carrizozo called Nogal there is a wonderful vista that I think is one off the most dramatic views I have ever experienced. There is also a photo gallery
(Tularosa Basin Gallery, the largest all New Mexico photography gallery in the State)
https://www.photozozo.org/ they are open Thursday thru Sunday...
