I have owned this lens now for about 2 years when it went on sale and I have to say that it is excellent. I get beautiful finely focused close ups of whatever I decide to shoot. Excellent lens and the price can't be beat.

Up until I lost it in the Camp Fire, it was one of my favorite lenses. I am thinking about getting another one. You can't go wrong with it imho.

Thank you all for your comments, it does help me to chose a macro lens.

Found this to be an excellent lens with no noise.

Augie - the Sigma EX 105 OS HSM Macro is a fantastic lens!!!! I have one on my Sony a77 II …

Use it every day. It's as quiet as a mouse! … And, at just $565 - you can't go wrong! … Go for it!!!

Have owned this lens for several years. It was my go to macro until I bought a Tamron 180mm. I prefer the 180mm today due to working distance. Still pull out the 105mm now and again and never disappointed with it. Have never had any problems with noise.

I have a Canon 100mm f2.8L lens. It's a fine lens, but I wish I had bought something with a longer focal length. I find the working distance to be too short to light properly. I know I could buy a ring flash, but I don't do enough macro photography to justify one.

Thanks again to you all for your advice.
BTW, I'll be interested in buying one if anyone has one in good shape for sale.

I have used the non-OS version of that lens a long time ago. Of all the Sigma lenses that I had, that was the only one I liked it was a decent lens!

Augie - the Sigma EX 105 f2.8 DG OS HSM Macro IS a DG - which means it's better suited for use on FF DSLRs - however, I shouldn't see why you'd have any problems, using it on a D5500. Bear in mind, though, it's a relatively heavy and longish lens. Which means - it'd be better suited to a Nikon FX or DX ProSumer model … and the D5500 is quite a small DSLR - perhaps, the smallest ever made!!!!

My Sony alpha a77 is a relatively large body - as DXI cameras go … and they're well-mated … balance, etc.

Have you considered the Tokina 100 f2.8 Macro? … The price is right - just $369, currently ….

Thank you Chris,
I'd looked at the Tokina you mentioned, but it does not have VR, something I prefer.

Augie; not sure for the major reason you want this lens, if it is for macro shots you may want to rethink about the VR. When I am taking macro shots at least 95% of the time it is on a tripod, VR needs to be turned off. Hope this helps in your decision. Charles

Thank you Charles,
I agree, but when I shoot living subjects like flowers and insects I don't use a tripod, so I like a lens with VR for that purpose since my hands are not very steady.
Currently I have a Nikon 40mm micro that does not have VR for close ups of not moving subjects (with a tripod and a focusing rail) and a Nikon 50mm 1.8 that does not have VR either, with tube extensions for everything else.
