I would travel Northward from Norfolk to Barr Harbor. New England in the Fall is the most beautiful place on earth at that time and the Summer heat is disappearing . The Adirondack mountains are stunning with lots of wildlife to see. The Maine coast line is gorgeous in the early morning. The Hudson River Valley I am told is one of a kind and ancient looking . Lake Hapotcon , New Jersey is a best kept secret place west of I95 and very cozy little place to stay and film.

You won't run out of places to see if you head North and take the Long Way around NYC to enjoy the land and the air unless you crave the lights & traffic and the hussle of that town.

Good luck

Everyone is right about what they think. However, there is a reality check required as it concerns drive time. The further you travel, the more time you need to spend in the car. As the distance between destinations increases; your time spent enjoying the outdoors and photo ops---decreases. Also, many areas have great photo ops; but are also redundant. Figure out how much time you have for your trip and find an area that will offer the most varied opportunities with the least amount of travel between destinations.

A little off the trail but if you are traveling across NY state the finger lakes and especially Watkins Glen. I understand there is a shuttle to take people to the top and then everything is down hill. Don't hold me on the shuttle as we walked both ways and totally enjoyed it.

Vermont and Adirondacks very nice in October for fall foliage, but leaf peepers make it very expensive. Book early, hotels fill up quick. There are remote areas in Adirondacks and lots of lakes but they are intermixed with residential and commercial so you need to know where you are going. Not like a national park with an entrance station and a park map.

Last week of September to mid October - fall foliage Maine, NH, VT and Adirondacks.

Last week of September is Green and Gold weekend in Northern VT. Oct is better for Down East Maine, Southern VT (Bennington area is particularly nice, as is Rt 100 from southern VT all the way up north. Adirondacks are stunning as well. Lots of great photo ops along the North River (headwaters of the Hudson), the High Peaks Region Mt Marcy, and West. The area around Mt Washington, either the west side (Rt 302, Crawford Notch, etc) or East, Pinkham Notch, North Conway, Jackson - all gorgeous country. If you get a chance, the Kancamagus Highway between North Woodstock and Conway is particularly stunning. If you want to get a "top of mountain" 360° view with not too much effort, the Black Cap Trail just east of North Conway is a winner.

Cape Ann and Rockport, MA and motif # 1' are all picturesque. If you are going that far south. Kitty Hawk, Cape Hattaras, even farther south.

To add to gene51’s post there is the Cog railroad up the White Mountain, fun trip plus excellent for photography also there is a gondola that also is fanatic for photography. We’re heading there for our yearly trip in a couple of weeks.

The east coast of the United States is 2,000 miles long 😊 Perhaps you're asking about a smaller country? You have an hour to edit your opening query.

Linda, Linda, Linda.... one could ACCEPT that the coastline of Maine is 228 miles - but that is as the crow flies - not as the photographer walks or rides. You should know, the coastline of Maine, with all the tidal coves and peninsulas and islands, is almost 3500 miles! More than the coastline of California even!

So - you are correct, though, that his question is biting off a mouthful!

Two years ago the wife and I took a two month RV trip to the NE. Spent a month in ME, then another month between VT and NH... The coast of Maine provided the most photographic opportunities. But pretty much can go wrong anywhere in the NE.

Sorry, and thanks for your response, but I was being snarky to the original OP in that she is doing the entire east coast and asked what to take pictures of, really too broad a request, it would take years to complete such a trip.
