Can Nikon and Canon lenses be swapped between the two?
You CAN put Nikon F mount lenses on Canon bodies via an adapter, but you cannot put Canon EF lenses on a Nikon body at all.
Well, that just hurt my feelings. I'm a Nikon man but, I saw a Canon lense I would LOVE TO HAVE!
There is no law that states you cannot own both a Nikon and a Canon body.

What's up with that! Canon is Proprietary?

You did not mention what type of lens and the intended use for it. Anything wrong with Nikon optics? I do not know what type of lens you want but all of the Nikon lenses I have used have done their part when I did mine.

Did I hurt your feelings?

Nikon's fine outstanding line of lenses can be used on Canon. And thank goodness the opposite is not true.

I've always shot Canon and firmly believe one should not mix and match. Years ago I used a few sigma lenses. When I replaced them with Canon lenses I could actually see a difference in image quality. I think the difference is not because of Sigma but because the lens and camera were made to "talk" to each other. If you have a Nikon camera, I would use Nikon lenses.

This is Your Good Friend Larry (Photographer) would say, "Best to use the Lenses from the same camera manufacture, their made for it!"

Both Nikon and Canon mounts are proprietary but that doesn't stop independent lens maker to make lenses for them. The reason you can't put a Canon lens on a Nikon because Nikon has the flange distance of 46.5mm and the Canon EF mount has the flange distance of 44mm. So if you put Canon lens on the Nikon it would sit too far from the sensor to focus to infinity. Well they could put a lens element in there to correct for the focusing but now you don't have the same quality lens any more.
Besides on those facts Canon lenses have no aperture ring and there is no way you can make a Nikon camera to control the aperture on the Canon EF lens.

No. Nikon put extra space between the lens flange and the senor to make it difficult to adapt the Canon lenses. They did this because they know their lenses are inferior and they would loose sales if the suprior Canon lenses could be used on their bodies. Canon has such good glass that the adapter is only needed for people who have given up on Nikon and need to use their existing lenses during the transition to Canon.
Nikon had great lenses (glass) in its heyday!
