I have been shooting Sony for a while, but I usually don't recommend that people switch to Sony unless there is something they really dislike about their current camera.

The Nikon D3500 right now is about $500 with the two kit lenses, and the D5600 is about $800 with the same lenses. If you still have the two lenses, then you can get the D5600 for less than $500 if you look around, or the D5500 (if you can find it at all) cheap.

The D5600 and D5500 both have a nice touchscreen, and nice autofocus. I think Nikon added their snapbridge software, or something like that to the D5600, but even loyal Nikon users have told me that it is not a feature they would pay a lot extra for.

You can pay a lot more for a camera, but I wouldn't do it unless you have a specific need.

Here are my suggestions. If you like your 3200. The 3500 is a substantial upgrade at not a lot of money. Consider also the D5xxx series. They add an articulating screen and some other upgrades. If you want a bigger body, (some prefer the smaller 3xxx and 5xxx series.) Jump up to a D7xxx series. You can get into a refurbished D7200 for under $700. I do not believe they are making them anymore so you can’t get new. But it is an excellent choice. For more money you can get the d7500. Which shares a lot of the D500 features. Right now the D500 is arguably the best crop sensor on the market. It will run you about $1500 plus. And I say plus because to use it’s full capabilities you need to also buy a Qxd card which will set you back about another $150. The D500 is a professional grade camera. Ideal for action, sports and nature photography. Great low light capabilities, and although it won’t match a full frame it is pretty damn good for portrait work. All my recommendations are crop sensors not full frame because you will still be able to use the lenses you already have. If you take the plunge to full frame you will also be looking at buying all new lenses. If you are willing to scrap the lenses you already have and go Full frame then you have a whole other set of possibilities in addition to Nikon as well as Mirrorless possibilities. If you have ever thought of switching systems assuming you do not have a lot invested in lenses now might be the least painless time to do it. Once you have invested heavily in lenses (where all the money is) it gets harder and harder to make the switch. Good luck with what ever you decide.

I have never used one but the D7200 has excellent reviews and it can be bought at a reasonable price. If refurbed so much better because the price will not be that high compared to a used body.

You can have the D3200++ in the D5600. Still lightweight, like the D3200, but with a fully-articulating touch screen, NFC, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Very versatile, not too expensive. Refurbished D5300 if the D5600 is a bit too much.

If most of your lenses are DX, consider a factory refurbished D7200. If you have some FX lenses, you could make the leap to a D750, which is a great body at reasonable cost for full frame.

I concur about the D7200 if you don't mind the extra weight and spending a few more dollars. You will get sharper handheld shots and manual focusing will be easier.

Sounds to me that this is an excuse to try out a Sony RX10 IV.

Go for the D3300 or the D5600

The most logical step up from the 3200 is the 5600. It’s similar to the 3200 with a few upgraded features. Having said that, I just bought the D500 and love it. Nikon has dropped the price, so if you can swing it and am ready for a big step up this is the best choice.

If she really liked her D3200, you can buy them used for between $200 and $300 at places like Adorama, eBay and KEH. Though I couldn't find one currently available on KEH. I also saw a reference for a used D3200 on Amazon.

I buy a lot of used equipment. Mostly lenses. But, recently I bought a Nikon Refurbished D810 from Adorama and am very pleased with it. I also, recently, bought a Used D7000 from KEH and was also very happy with the purchase.

Stick to used products that are in the upper strata of condition. Using the grading system at KEH, I'd stick to grade E or above. Be sure to check the grading system of the seller you are looking at. Grade E on eBay is substantially lower grade than grade E on KEH. On eBay, I stick to "mint" or better. I've bought several products that have been refurbished by Nikon. I have been really pleased with these. Nikon refurbished products are usually completely indistinguishable from new.

There are 3 sellers that I trust the most for used products: KEH, Adorama and B&H. I just ordered a used Nikon F4 on eBay. I am waiting to see if I am happy with that choice.
