I've never used a selfie stick. Don't even have a smart phone. Gave it back to the company when I retired 5 yrs ago. If I did have one though I can assure you that I wouldn't put it, or my camera, on a picnic table or whatever, or even on a tripod, in a public setting such as the theme park mentioned by the OP and then step back while hoping that some fleet-footed little punk doesn't see a golden opportunity to get a new phone.
