Sometimes my phone is the only camera I have. I have a couple of fine cameras but this was shot one morning when I had nothing but an iPhone.

No, 'cell-phoners' want snap shots and you want more.

That is a great story and a well-thought out statement. I have the greatest admiration for people who are experts in their field whether it be a car mechanic or nuclear scientist. What I appreciate is not only their expertise but their enthusiasm regarding their field and their eagerness to share their knowledge. Me, I’m a jack of all trades and master of none (Of course I use to be a baseball statistics nut like your friend).
Thanks for sharing your story.

Cell phones are great. People are capturing moments in life that are totally irreplaceable, and it is wonderful.
But, I will keep my DSLS and my long expensive lenses.
Let them wonder why all they want.
I make images for me, and I will continue—even as a snob.

Unless you need to freeze motion, or blur the background, or use low light, cell phones are fine.

The best camera is the one you have with you. So many times I see great (or interesting) shots when I don't have my big cameras, but the phone is always there. And, I find that my understanding of photo techniques lets me get better shots with the phone. Run them through lightroom to clean them up, and they can go on a wall or get posted.

Yes you're a snob, and deservedly so.

Still, cell phones are extremely handy, unlike DSLRs, which makes their so-so pictures worthwhile -- at least we can grab a shot.

I'm sorry to say that I don't carry my Nikon with me much anymore.

I know many who have gone from cell phone to a dedicated Digital camera because they start taking lots of shots with their phone and realize that they LIKE IT. So, they want to do better and walla, they go Digital, so many camera's, so many choices, their is a camera for everyone, full frame, mirrorless, 4/3, cropped, YES VIRGINIA, it is a wonderful world. Last year the total digital market zoomed, and there is no end in site. Happy days are here again.

I use both, the cell phone is always handy. I have noticed that on several vacations very few people had cameras on a strap (I did), almost everyone had a cell phone.
Some observations from several families I know well. Hardly anyone prints a cell phone photo, they have thousands of pictures and very seldom delete the bad ones, no one transfers the photos to a computer or external hard drive, they have a hard time finding a photo they are looking for, and many times during updates or changing phones have lost most of them. I am old and old fashioned, if the place or situation is meaningful to me , I carry my Sony.

I have two DSLRs, two digital Coolpix, a couple of old Nikon film SLRs, and a Yashica twin lens reflex. So, you might say my interest in photography is not a new thing. However, last week at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ, I had to use my iPhone 7 to shoot through glass to capture a moray eel in a low light display. Flash was out of the question, and there wasn’t enough light to shoot my D5500 handheld. The phone will take decent photos if you compose, focus and provide a stable base, but it just can’t provide the IQ that a good camera and great lenses can. For 99% of the people, good enough is good enough.

I’d be happy if they cleaned their little lens once in awhile!

I was actually complimented by woman with a cell phone. She stated “nice to see someone with a real camera!”

you're not a snob. You're either a pro, or an enthusiast, or an amateur, or a hobbyist, some combination of them.
I use my cell phone for recording things I need to buy, fix, or duplicate; family snaps where I don't have my camera; recording things like traffic incidents, etc. I have even made a couple videos with it to send the kids or grand kids... (and even more)... I entered one sunrise I shot with it in an Art Show... (unusual for me).. I have even shot a couple things for "proof of concept" - to see if something's worth coming back for -- to me, it's just another tool... But I don't consider it for my serious stuff...

When I go out on my nature shoots, or anything I consider serious photography,
It's the DSLR and and some gear... (the RIGHT tools, for me)...
We are not snobs...
