I started photography almost 2 years ago trying to make portraits out of all my images. Recently gaining new perspectives since being on UHH, because of so many of the much more experienced photographers here displaying birds and wildlife with more of their habitat included in the image. Wondering what the general opinion of an Egret simply surrounded by water should be cropped more or less? All comments greatly appreciated....Vic

I'M in agreement with everyone about the placement of the main subject.
But I have more of a problem with all of the black spots on the water, they really are a distraction, at least for me.

Foremost, nice shot!

My thoughts!

I would take #3 set the horizon by tilting to the right side until it continues to look natural. I would slightly underexpose and remove some of the highlights so that more detail in the white was seen. Don't crop too deep, leave enough space above and below so that it doesn't get claustrophobic. Should be a great image.

I would have cropped it in portrait. You need more room above the bird. I’ve cropped yours, but I would guess your original has more room to give.

It is my personal opinion that a shot of a bird or an animal works best when the environment where the bird or animal lives is included in the shot. There is a place for portraits but in general showing the environment where the bird or animal lives offers a better impact.
Your No. 2 and No. 3 shots are excellent and yes, try to leave some room in front of the bird in flight.

The feet need more room.
Mounted might put them right under the edge of the mat.

number two for crop... but shift bird and reflection to the left so that there is more perceived motion in the image... looks like the subject is moving in a direction, not static....

OK...cropped a little off the bottom, gave him more room to fly, kept the ripple at his little feet, took the level flight off and back to the original flying slightly upward ?????

Now just "clean up" the spots on the water and I'll frame it and put it on my wall...
