I started photography almost 2 years ago trying to make portraits out of all my images. Recently gaining new perspectives since being on UHH, because of so many of the much more experienced photographers here displaying birds and wildlife with more of their habitat included in the image. Wondering what the general opinion of an Egret simply surrounded by water should be cropped more or less? All comments greatly appreciated....Vic

# 2 OR 3 FOR ME. #1 LOOKS TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE.

This would have been a good candidate for a portrait shot. It's also important, when shooting this tight and for the reflection, to get the image straight as cropping could be a problem. And, really, this should have been posted elsewhere on the site, perhaps the gallery section or the image critique section. Keep working on it.

I was trying to get more of a closeup, but I think I agree

They would all look better with more room in front of the bird than behind it. Animals need room in the direction they are moving, or if stationary the direction they are looking. "most of the time"

#1 is a bit tight for my taste.

One more vote for #2. It has the best balance for me

Level the image and leave room in front of the bird and you'll have a really nice image. IMHO. Birds in flight take a little practice. Looks like you are off to a good start.

Try #3 in portrait format. Nice shot by the way.

What do you mean by: "portrait format"?
