Sandy, I just bought a Nikon 50mm 1.8 AFS G lens used off of mpb photo for 154.00 on EX cond. It is very sharp and light, I use it on my D7100 Nikon camera and love it, think it is sharper than the 1.4 version, check u tube reviews. Good luck in your hunt. Jim Bianco

What are you planning on using it for?

My guess is the OP wants to use it to take pictures. Of course just a WAG on my part.

Sandy in my experience your wisest option would be the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens
(which is an effective 50mm on a DX crop such as the D7100)

Currently $166 new albeit you can find it used in very good condition for $100

btw, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens suggest above is NOT reasonable priced at $407...
I have this lens and it works reasonably well on a full frame but not so much on a DX body...

There are older Full Frame versions of the 50mm but you would likely be far better served to stay with a DX lens instead... my choice is the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens... it is pretty much the best DX optic in this focal length range...

I shoot with both of the aforementioned lens on a D7100 and the results are stellar...

Even good old uncle Ken recommends it.... lol

Nikon makes a 35mm f1.8 DX lens that in your D7100 will give you the same view of a 50mm lens with a full frame camera. The Nikon 50mm f1.8 is pretty good and reasonably priced in the second hand market if that is what you want.

"...I want to do some macro with flowers, etc..." Sandy as I previously mentioned... my choice is the Nikon AF-S DX micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens... albeit you'll be very close in with this optic for "true Macro i.e. 1:1...

However most folks confuse close up with micro so I'm certain the above mentioned is good, unless you need to count the pollen grains on the anther... only then would you be going to 1:1 which the 40mm can do but lighting is another story altogether....

Best to check out the True Micro Photography forum https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html
and the Close Up Photography Forum https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-113-1.html

Folks in this "Main" Forum are pretty naive on what is technically required and techniques involved in Macro Photography... lots of folks simply trying to validate their purchases... enough said.

I have the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G and used it on my D3400 and D5600. It is a good fast lens for getting in close and focuses fast even in low light. I gave $219 for it new at Best Buy. Not the 400 dollars you suggest. I've seen it on sale later for less than I gave for it.

I have the Nikon 1.8G and have used it on two Nikon crop sensor cameras (d5100, d7100) and also a full frame d750. Right now, it's $176 which is really cheap for a brand new full frame lens. I don't feel I missed much at 1.8 versus 1.4. I know the 1.8 focuses very very well in low light too. I've shot events indoors and even outdoors at night, beach shots etc. Dynamite little lens. Here are a few pics that I could grab that were shot with crop sensor Nikons. FWIW, an a little off topic but I shot the d7100 a lot. IMHO, the best Nikon dx lens is the 17-55 2.8. It has pro quality build construction, metal, lists for $1,500 and I've shot with it quite frequently. Used, $450-500. Image quality etc is superb. I've shot weddings with that combo in addition to a d750/lens. It basically competes with a 24-70 2.8. I also gave my grandson a Nikon d3400 and a Nikon 35 1.8 dx lens. I was not impressed. Stick with 50 1.8g. Anyway, good luck!

I've used a full frame 50mm f/1.8D and the NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G on a D7200, and agree with Thomas902. Though it can do 1:1 macro, the 40mm focal length is frustratingly short for that purpose. However, as a "normal" length DX lens capable of extreme close-ups the 40mm f/2.8 is very nice. I actually bought it to use for slide duplication and was pleasantly surprised to discover how good it is as a normal lens.

Sandy, I'd only recommend Nikkor optics for your D7100. As already recommended, go for the f/1.4.

I chose the f./1.4 50mm Nikkor and have never regretted it! Super sharp. Available used from a reputable source or refurbished by Nikon at a good price. Worth the money!

I just purchased a 50mm f/1.8 lens. The lens is now selling for $176 vs the 50mm f/1.4 of over $400. And the 50mm f/1.8 for the D1700 Nikon is actually a slight better the the f/1.4. See the ephotozine.com below and compare it to the f/1.4.

I use the Nikon 50mm f1.8 G. Nice and sharp, under $200 new.

Great advice and I totally back everything said. I use both lenses. The 35mm f1.8 G on my D7500 and the 40mm f2.8 G Macro on my flippy viewing D5200, both are DX cameras. Of course the Macro has less distortion and is more practical choice but the 35mm is faster (I shoot it at f4 and get very sharp images).
