I have a Nikon 200-500mm zoom lens and it weighs 7.5 pounds. I think a good pistol grip would help. Your recommendation would be appreciated.

Currently experimenting with the Nikon Pistol grip model 2 (originally for my Nikkor 50-300 from film days) in combination with the MC DC 2 trigger. A bit awkward since jury rigged. It may be possible to combine / splice MC-DC2 with MC-3A. Current setup works adequately, pistol grip a big improvement to handling the 200-500.

Here is one I made also - 1/4 alum bar stock and PVC pipe - Canon 400 prime.

But what you really need is a bodypod - https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-269999-1.html

With a pistol grip, you still have the weight of the lens and body. I have the Nikon 200-500 and my solution for the weight is a Monopod.

Certainly an excellent option - have a monopod and various tripods. Unless I am going to a static position they slow me down too much. Just hauling the monopod with my old Nikon 600 5.6, or more recently the 200-500 out of the car, and often the bird has flown.

As to the body pod, just don't care to fasten things to myself. Individual solutions for individuals.

You do have to be committed and serious ....a monopod would set up faster, but BP is better for BIF...

Yes, different strokes for different folks !

Actually, I get satisfactory results - both birds and bugs in flight, both subjects of considerable interest to me - hand held.

Check out Regis, who has a pistol grip on a 600mm lens.

First of all the 200-500 only weighs 5 lbs. Are you talking about the 200-400?

A monopod or a body pod might be a good solution. Novoflex and Cotton Carrier each make something that could work.

And you can always contact Imagemeister here on UHH - Larry will share with you some of his ingenious solutions for camera stability.

When we first started we thought that Manfrottos handgrip/ballgrips were the cats pyjamas. After 3 years no more. Either a gimbal or monopod is easier. Haven't explored this option yet but possibly a body cage with a long front/back arca swiss plate so you can adjust the weight balance on whatever stand device you decide to use. A pistol grip moves control away from the camera/lens combo ie alters the center of balance too much.

Manfrotto has great pistol grips. I got the best one and it really is tight and solid. It certainly works with the combination of my D800 and 70-200mm, which is a good combination of weight. No budge at all.

Excellent grip, and it wont break the bank. This has the most mounting surface, when compared to other grips. I used it for the last year and it is perfect for long lenses and video.

I do not recommend a pistol grip for this lens, especially when it is zoomed out to 500 mm. Too front heavy, hand holding the lens just behind the lens hood will result in better images than using a pistol grip. Try it out and you will see I am right. Also use VR normal, not sport, for hand held shots.
