Living across the Cooper River from Charleston, I know all of the above suggestion will keep you busy for a week. Enjoy your visit of a few days. That will just get you started on what is here. If you do cross the Cooper into Mount Pleasant, go to the Shem Creek area and that park. A good restaurant to try there is the Saltwater Cowboys. Their Shrimp and Grits and their fried shrimp are outstanding. Have a great visit!

Thanks. My wife and I have been going to Charleston for decades, and it seems like we find a new restaurant every time. We often go to Shem creek just to get away from the tourists during the summer and haven’t tried Saltwater Cowboys - but we will! Keep the suggestions coming - always good to hear from a “native”

Cheers.

Hi all, will be visiting Charleston SC for a couple of days next week. Any suggestions on top sites/subjects to photography. Thanks.

Visit Middleton Place Plantation. Beautiful gardens with lots of alligators and beautiful birds.

A short drive away is Kiawah Island, beautiful and unspoiled beach (day trip from Charleston but watch out for the alligators!).

Just a couple of days?

Downtown Charleston is a must, many historic buildings and churches not to forget the Battery, White Point Gardens, and the Pineapple fountain.

The Arthur Ravenel Bridge leading to Shem Creek, Poes Tavern (as in Edgar Allen Poe theme) on Sullivans Island offers great burgers, and is close to Fort Moultrie. If you visit your choice of eateries in Shem Creek on your way back to town, after dinner enjoy a stroll on the boardwalks of Shem Creek Park in the golden evening hour.

South of Charleston is the often photographed Angel Oak on Johns Island, then on to Folly Beach where you’ll find the pier, the washout and on the Northern end of Folly about a 1/4 mile walk to views of the Morris Island lighthouse.

The plantations offer many photo opportunities. The tours both walking and carriage rides are great as well. The temperatures look reasonable for the area, hopefully the humidity won’t be as extreme as it can be.

If you like baseball and the River Dogs are in town, watch for Bill Murray who has an interest in tbe team. Darius Rucker formerly part of Hootie and the Blowfish, now a country singer lives in the area and has been seen in downtown Charleston as well as Sullivans Island.

So much to do....

Enjoy your visit.

I agree with all that has been said, particularly the recommendation of Botany Bay, which I visited last week. (I have attached photos.) In Charleston, some of the best shots are on a boat looking back at land. Take a tour, looking back at the land.

All of the venues suggested for you to visit in Charleston are great! I would add the Unitarian Church Cemetery on King Street. It is not manicured and the overgrown vegetation makes it really spooky at night if you take the ghost tour. I captured some great images there; the B & Whites are really noteworthy IMHO. "The Holy City" and environs are lovely. McClellanville is about 30 miles north on 17...a small, quaint little village with one restaurant, an active art's council, a small nautical museum, and lots of live oaks. On the way to McClellanville in Awendaw is the Center for Birds of Prey: worth the trip! Google it as the hours for different events vary.

Charleston has abundant photo ops as you are hearing. We were there last year and happened upon a great venue—The Hunley Project, 1250 Supply St, North Charleston (short drive from the Historical District). The Hunley is a Civil War submarine recently discovered in the bay and being restored by Clemson University. The sub is on display and photos are allowed. They have tours and open up an amazing story. A don’t miss in my opinion. The different plantations are also great to visit. Also, a destination for great food. Enjoy.

As you can see, I'm behind on the forum and it's too late to offer any suggestions. I hope you had a great trip. We spent 4 nights in Charleston at the end of March; we did the same three years ago and we will be back. It's a beautiful city, as I'm certain you will agree. Please post photos (if you haven't already done so). I'll be posting some of mine soon, along with some from the rest of our trip that also included two nights in Savannah and 4 nights in Manhattan.
