I think next time I have to replace my mono-pod I'll look around for a $350 one. I don't know how long it will be before I will need a new one though. My SLIK has worked flawlessly since day one and I have carried film slrs, film medium format, and now digital slrs over my shoulder attached to it for many years and more miles than I can calculate. It has a few scars and still works flawlessly. But I would sure like to tell my friends that I own a $350 monopod!

Yes. And I'll also tell them about the $350 head.

Hey boys, there are those that own Leica equipment on here too. Please feel free to buy whatever equipment/brand you want at whatever cost. Imagemeister is impressive with what he's designed and built, but not everybody owns a machine shop, or has on in their basement, and not everyone has the skill set needed to build something. I don't have either but I do like RRS gear. I like it a lot and recommend it often. Best of luck.
I have a Gitzo high end monopod that I purchased off eBay in excellent condition for about half the cost new. I forget the model number but I believe it has 5 sections and collapses fairly short. I also have the RRS twist tilt head I also purchased the same way off eBay. Prior to the Gitzo I had a Sirui carbon fiber monopod that was nice for about $100 retail. Good luck with your choice.

I am looking for a monopod recommendation. I like to shoot a lot of nature -- flowers, insects and the like and get tired of supporting my 100mm macro lens. A lot of times I'm close to the ground or squatting and was thinking perhaps a monopod could help take the weight of my canon 7d mark ii and my lens. I also have a mpe-65 lens with flash that I haven't played with yet. Do you have any recommendations for me. Besides the monopod itself, is that anything else I should get with it? I'm going with an acra swiss system for my tripod and ball head.

I do not recommend a monopod for macro work. You are much better off with a tripod, one with an independent center post. Here is one that is on ebay for a good price, the photo's do not show it, but the center column can go horizontal, if you put a ball head on it, you will have a great system for macro.

So where did you get it? Can you give us a web site?
if you want a monopod consider iFootage Cobra 2 A180 Aluminum Monopod. It seems to be on backorder at B&H and Adorama but not Amazon. For high mags use a tripod.
That would be a big waste of money when a 35.00 one will work just as good.

A Monopod is excellent for stabilizing when using long lenses, but not so great for close to the ground, since they are usually 24" in length. You'll get closer with a tripod that has no center column and can extend the legs to an extreme angle.
Also, a ball head like you'd use on a tripod is useless on a monopod. You need a specialized monopod one direction head.
Why is a ball head useless on a monopod?
Its not useless when you shooting at a 30 deg angle you monopod will de sticking out at 30 deg think about it.

You can search the archive for the monopod topic and about using different heads on monopods. There was a pretty lengthy discussion just in the past week or so. Personally I don’t really care for ball heads on a tripod and especially not a monopod. I prefer a tilt head on a monopod and a pano gimbal on a tripod, even for short lenses.
You will find that it is a subject with nearly as many opinions as there are people. At least I can truthfully say I own and have tried all three. Everyone has their favorite and you will have to find yours.
I just find that ball heads can get a little floppy on a monopod especially as the lenses get larger and longer. The tilt head or gimbal controls that better in my experience.
