Indeed!

Buy a reasonably priced clamp and plate and spend the money you save on a new glass.

Or, do what satisfies you if you can!

At the risk of adding another contender, I decided to use Peak Design base plates (sort of a 4 way Arca plate) on all my gear incl tripod and monopod heads (PD plates attach to any Arca Swiss receptor). Also have the added bonus of being able to clip gear to a belt or back pack strap when changing lenses or other gear.
Also use their hand strap called a "clutch" which loops into the capture plate which is permanently attached to the camera base - detail here - https://www.peakdesign.com/collections/straps/products/clutch

Short review of the whole system here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fizRPGpyhNE&t=38s

Have tried the Manfrotto system but this alternative is one of best shared attachment systems going IMHO

To be complete you will also need an L bracket and I recommend this to go along with the L bracket to allow for balancing camera/lens without tripod collar -

Well, I definitely want to be complete and quite frankly my brain is getting fried with everything to think about. That's why I kept putting off doing my tripod research cause I knew it was gonna be a dilly. I do plan on purchasing an L bracket and really appreciate your recommendation. By tripod collar, do you mean a mount ring?

There was nothing wrong with the other manufacturers. Specifically, they were not compatible with each other. I wanted one mount that made all of my gear interchangeable and arca-swiss was a standard that was best for me. I could mount a camera or lens on my mono, ball head, camera strap or gimbal with no adapters or plate changes. There are several manufacturers that provide arca-swiss style mounts. I happen to prefer the RRS arca-swiss because of their choices that also include lever type releases. I have heard that there is no strict standard for a-s (arca-swiss) dimensions, so I wanted to stay with RRS or Wimberley so I would not chance any issues.

If you do not anticipate frequent changes and don't mind inconveniences, this is not an issue. I can go to an opportunity, pop my camera or lens from my shoulder strap and and immediately attach it to any of my supports. I can change from a ball head to a gimbal in a matter of seconds. Some may wonder what my hurry is! If I'm driving the salt marshes or a wildlife area, I don't waste excess time making changes and missing an opportunity. I can quickly use anything I have and sometimes that's too slow!

Thanks for the clarification! I don't like inconveniences and I'm sure I will not like fiddling around with gear and missing opportunities!

I have finally decided to muddle through purchasing a tripod system. I need help with quick release clamps and plates. I am thinking of purchasing an FLM CB-32 F ball head. I will need an arca quick release clamp and plate. I will be using my Canon 7D Mark II. I will also be using the Canon tripod mount rings B and D.

FLM has a 40 and a 60 quick release clamp that is compatible with arca plates. And there are a gazillion other quick release clamps out there.

And then I need to buy an arca plate for the 7DMII. Again -- a gazillion choices.

I need recommendations for a good quality clamp and plate -- something I'm not gonna have problems with that will work with my equipment. Do you have any?

If you haven't used a ball head, I would recommend you look at pan tilt or geared heads. I never got comfortable using ball heads. YMMV. For plates, etc I recommend Kirk.

Op/Tech makes an arca-swiss plate with a loop for attaching a strap system. They also make a strap-carry system for a tripod. Very smart stuff and you can purchase from the company site or from Amazon.

So, if I have a lens with a tripod collar, I would need a different nodal rail slide to allow for balancing?

I suggest you explore the Really Right Stuff website to learn more about the various rails and support options. Lots of good information there whether you buy their products or not...

RRS also publishes a free periodical that shows the use of their products by very talented photographers. It is a very nicely done magazine.

Yes, I recommend using a "long" 100mm A/S plate on large lenses with tripod collar - the longer length will give you more options for balancing and you can use it also as a carry handle.

For Plates I suggest you look at "SunWayFoto". A Pro over here put me on to them (UK website). I purchased one, as their price was considerably cheaper that all the established producers of plates. Beautiful precise engineering! Since then I have purchased a couple more. You won't be disappointed.

Here is the US website. http://www.sunwayfoto.us/Plates.html
