Have you considered the new Nikon 140-400 f/4 E TC1.4? It is a phenomenally sharp lens. It is heavy, but every time I take it, I have always been rewarded with the results.
Have fun.
If you just want to try something different, how about finding an old Sigma 350 - 1200mm f/11. By adding the dedicated 1.4 converter you get a 490 - 1680mm f/16. It weights only 24.5 lbs. It's quite long and wide, so the push-pull zoom uses a handle on each side of the lens (similar to the handles on WWII bomber turret machine guns). It is somewhat easier to carry if you get the dedicated hard case which, when standing upright, is only about waist high.

I'm on vacation this coming week and wanted to rent a lens for my D500. I normally use a 200-500mm, but want to try something different. My choices are 300mm f4 or 500mm f5.6. What would you choose?
Does the rental inventory offer a Nikon 1000mm cat lens? That would give you some reach.
If you want to rent the New Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF I would get on line and set up rental today if you can find it available. It's still not accessible at all of the rental outfits. I just got back from vacation and used for the first time the new Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8 PF and was blown away by the sharpness and it's ability to isolate the subject, kept it at F/2.8 most of the time. I also kept my other lens 80-400mm lens attached to second body so I had the best of two worlds. What ever you decide to rent, just keep it light enough to carry around and to enjoy yourself.. Have fun.....

I ended up going with the 500mm f5.6.
Next time try the 300 pf with a 1.4x, it's the smallest and lightest 420mm.

I ended up renting the 500mm f5.6. I have to admit, it is a great lens.

That's what I hear, and very well balanced. Did you see Steve Perry's video? I think I might still get the 500pf at some point.
Here's some pictures of the 300 pf with the tc-1.4e iii next to my 70-200mm f2.8 e fl for future reference.

I did see his video. It's light weight and comfortable to use especially on long hikes. The VR system is incredibly.
