I'm on vacation this coming week and wanted to rent a lens for my D500. I normally use a 200-500mm, but want to try something different. My choices are 300mm f4 or 500mm f5.6. What would you choose?
Are you shooting any particular subjects or situations?

gnadeau80 - Since you already have a 200-500mm zoom, why are these two primes which are both within the range you have covered of interest to you? I would think a zoom lens might be more functional and flexible shooting wildlife or birds. Are you shooting hand-held or do you use a tripod/monopod? For wildlife have you tried resting (stabilizing) your camera/lens on some sort of inexpensive beanbag? I just don’t see what you are going to gain by either lens choice. Maybe I’m missing something. /Ralph

Hand held & monopod. Was just thinking about trying a different lens, no particular reason behind it.

If you have the "need" to try something different then try something you don't already have covered. Get the 300mm F4 PF, its a stop faster than your 200-500 and you will be amazed at how light it is.

For vacations, smaller/lighter is better....

The 500 f/5.6 is getting rave reviews, I don't shoot Nikon but I can tell you that I have owned both the Canon 300 f/4 and the Canon 300 f/2.8 and they are an entirely different class of lenses, the f/4 can not compare to the f/2.8 in image quality. I guess I am saying that if you are considering image quality the 300/4 would probably be no different than your 200-500.

I have both of those lenses. Actually I own all three. You cannot replace the versatility of the 200-500 on the D500.
You must first decide what your going to shoot and at what distance the subject will be. Because the 300 becomes and angle of view of a 450mm on your D500 and the 500 becomes like a 750mm. That is a difference of 300 mm .
With all of that said when shooting your 200-500 what do you normally shoot that lens at? If, for example, you shoot most of your shoots at 500, then rent the 500. On the other hand, if most of your shoots are under 400mm, then rent the 300.
BUT BEWARE, using either the 300 or 500 is dangerous to your wallet. Cause your going to want to buy either or both after using them.
For heaven's sake, what do you want the lens for? Understand that with your D500 you have a "digital factor" that makes any lens fit to your camera to enlarge the image 1.5 times. The 200-500 f5.6 VR from what I know is an excellent lens for wildlife and sports photography.
Perhaps what you need, if general photography crosses your mind is something like a 18-140 VR lens.

Using the numbers you have given the difference may be up to 5 pounds of weight. This is considered by some as a "deal breaker".

Neither. I would want to try out a 600mm f/4.
