If you want wide, the full-frame 24-105 is not a good choice. You lose that 'wide' 24mm on your camera type. Instead, your best bet is the EF-S 10-18mm F/4.5-5.6 IS STM. If desiring for full-frame lenses, a used copy of the 17-40L is in your price range. Not as 'wide' as the EF-S lens on your camera type, but 17mm much wider than a lens starting at 24mm. If you want a longer overall zoom range, look for a used copy of the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. There's a few flavors of the 18-135, watch for the "IS USM" as the most recent version, the "IS STM" version is also good with a silent AF motor for video.

Of course there is always the EFs 15-85mm which covers the upper half of ultra-wide lens territory and zooms to very useful 85mm. It's my general purpose walk around lens. It is still $799 new, but the OP may be able to get a refurbished one for a bit more than what he is hoping to spend.

Canon does not make an 800D but they make a crop body 80D, you can pick up a Sigma 10-20mm F 3.5 from B&H photo on sale for 400$ or many others in that price range.

I have the 10-18. Best value for the price but it is a wide only. 18-135 was my kit lens for my first DSLR (70D) and it served me well getting started. Once you have mastered the tech and start to feel you want more "flexibility, blur, range, image quality etc...then you can start to explore low aperture prime lenses and long telephoto. For now, based on what you said you wanted, I would go with the 18-135 IS USM. (Latet version). The older original version photos were a little softer. You can get a used on very inexpensively AND for your price range, you may be able to afford a 50mm F1.8 in there also !! I recommend to anyone starting out in photography to have the 50mm1.8 included in the budget. That lens is the on-ramp to expanding your photography creativity :-)

Hi, I have a Canon 800D and I am looking for a good, multi-purpose lens for it that has wide angle. I do not want to pay more than $350-ish. I have read some good reviews of the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Has anyone used this, and if so, what do you think? Other recommendations of a multi-purpose Canon-compatible lens with wide angle that can be bought (used is fine with me) for under $400?

How wide do you want? On a T4i I use a Canon 10-18, wide enough for me, nice in town or city walk around, a bit longer is my Sigma 17-70, that's the two most mounted lenses for outdoor shooting. Bob.

Thank you, this looks like a nice lens to add to my wish list for my Canon T6. Canon refurb has them list at $218.99

The Canon 10-18mm is a very high quality wide-angle lens for the price (around $300).

I have a 18-135 IS USM on my 77d. It stays on the camera 90% of the time and covers most situations. I second the comments on the 10-18 for wide angle shots but I don't find this lens as versatile as the other.

I second the motion (though a bit late for a second!) already submitted by others here - the 10-18 and the 18-135 are excellent lenses (see high recommendations by Rockwell), as well as the 50mm 1.8. I use all three with my 70D (along with a 70-200 L f/4.0. I haven't regretted for a minute the purchase of any of them!!!

the 18-135 would be perfect for you and that camera. It only weighs a pound, goe from wide angle to medium telephoto, is sharp and dependable. I do 95% of my shooting in this range, and, the price is right in your ballpark!

For a crop sensor, I highly recommend the very good Canon 15-85 EF-S lens. This is one of Canon's best crop sensor lenses, gives you a wider view than the 24-105L/4, is lighter and I bet you won't be able to tell the difference image wise. About 250-$300. Can't go wrong with this lens. Also recommend, for similar reasons, the Canon 17-85 EF-S lens.

The Canon 10-22 is the "cadillac" of the ultra wide lenses for crop bodies, but it's in the $600 range ($350 used ?). The 10-18 is a third the price and every bit as good optically. Check the Canon refurb sales at Canon.com for a good deal. Sigma and Tamron also make similar lenses.

Good advice! The latest Canon 18-135mm USM offers a great range for everyday shooting and is an excellent lens. It focuses quickly, and produces sharp images. My 18-135mm USM lens stays on my camera about 80% of the time.
