The last pet snake we had was a Ball Python (my son's pet), but it was a hand-me-down and very agressive, we ended up finding another home for it, with a local pet shop owner. I had a hognose when I was a youngstrer but my parents wouldn't let me keep a snake. We have many of the local varieties on the property and I see them when the weather is warm (which is a lot here), I tell them to stick around and eat all the vermin they desire, and don't leave, the neighbors don't like snakes!!

I hope they listened to you.
My parents actually let me keep a snake, a hognose. I thought it was no problem, although we lived in a Bronx tenement bldg, and I had to send for live frogs mail order to feed it. I kept the frogs in another aquarium and some croaked all night keeping me up. I snuck over at night with a flashlight to see which one was croaking. Guess who got fed to the hognose first?
A problem did arise. My Mom had to dust and whenever she neared the tank the stupid snake would throw itself against the glass with a loud hiss. This scared the crap out of my Mom and eventually, she began having nightmares which woke up my Father. My Father made me get rid of it, so I brought it to the Bronx Zoo. It probably wound up as food for something.

Didn't mean it as a challenge, just an opinion. I think it looks really well fed for a year!!

Just kidding about the challenge, but to continue our discussion, if the snake was on the same plane as the ball, it would be about 20 balls long or about 35 in. However our photographer probably wasn't carrying more than a 200 to 300mm lens with him golfing. Also, he wasn't going too close to the snake and he didn't spook the snake (It wasn't looking at him and it didn't run.) (and the ball is out of the focal plane) I figure about 10-12 ft. away and the ball another 2 ft further so the actual size of the snake would be about 3/4 the apparent size or a little over 2 ft. long. (The snake could be 1 ft. at birth) This corresponds nicely with the 4 sheds or rattles and would put this western diamondback at around 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 years old. Check me out if you wish.

I just noticed your snake discussion and want to help correct your figures. I shot the photo with a Nikon D850 using a 28-300mm lens at 300mm. The relative proportions of the golf ball and the snake are misleading. It's like shooting the moon with a telephoto but focusing on a person on a bridge in silhouette. the golf ball looks larger than it is. The snake was more like 4-5 feet long, its body was about the diameter of my wrist. The coil of the snake was between 12" and 14" like the size of a medium pizza pan. It wasn't looking at me it was looking at my grandson who was standing closer to the snake with a golf club in case it decided to uncoil. It was a very healthy and fairly large rattle snake. Like others mentioned, it looked well fed.
