Buying a camera is like buying car. Basic function is pretty much the same from one to another. And 99% of the time, the differences don't matter anyway.
Choose the one you like and have fun, whether driving or shooting.

If you can afford it and it's what you want, then, by all means, go for it. And no, you are not crazy. I'm 85 and still use a DSLR with a vertical grip(80D). So, enjoy.
Both cameras are re-badged Panasonic Lumix models. If you like the red dot and are willing to pay for it, have at it.
...the image quality on the D-Lux 7 will be better...but in my opinion they are different types of cameras...the D-Lux 7 is more of a travel camera and the V-Lux (typ 114) is more of a wildlife/sports camera because of its reach to 400mm...the V-Lux is also 4 years older...and if it’s true what others are saying about its similarities to the Panasonic a new model might be out shortly...mostly by September or November...but I wouldn’t wait around for that...just realize that it’s possible and have no regrets if it does...if you are looking for a camera that is easier to carry around and is better than your phone go with the 7...if you want to get closer to the action go with the 114...good luck with your choice...!

After many many months of comparisons, I've narrowed my choices to two Leicas: the V-lux 114 Type or the D-lux 7. Both meet my needs for the types of photography, the image quality I want and the lighter weight that I need at age 82. Does anyone think I'm crazy? Go ahead, I won't be offended. (Snide comments not welcome.) Thanks for helping.
The D-Lux is much cooler looking for an 82-year old! Get a beret and go to Paris.
I believe the Panasonic and Leica are the same. Read it in a photo magazine artice some time ago.

Does the way a camera "looks" effect the images it produces?
It does for me! I can’t say for the OP though.
The issue is raised: Do some photographers consider the image they create in the community by the camera they carry? Do people buy Leica when identically capable Panasonics are available?
I think we should consider the image we create when we push the shutter button.
I have Nikons, Canons, Sonys, an Olympus, a Pentax, some Rolleis and choose the camera when I go out for the purpose at hand. I cover the brandnames on my DSLRs with black tape as well.
Pay no attention to those who try to downplay your moment. You are entitled to do with your money, especially at 82, as you please. I do like the thoughts that you should rent, or at least try, both, then decide what fits you best, if you have not already done this. Have fun with your new Leica.

I do not know about the cameras the OP considered but I know for sure I would buy the older Dlux typ 109 instead of the Panasonic LX100 because the Leica was made in Japan and the Panasonic was made in China.

I bought a V-lux 114 for a trip to Africa and absolutely love it. I especially like the viewfinder. I wear glasses. The zoom was fine for me, make sure it is enough for what you want. I like everything about this camera. (I have a Sony RX 100 III and Canon EOS Mark 7 II. My Leica is my go to camera. (I carry my camera on my wrist in a cloth bag when I’m out - easy to get to quickly and bag small enough to stay on wrist. Have a nice trip!

Buy the camera you think best - forget what someone else thinks you should buy.

Certainly as I believe only the one that buys and uses the camera knows which is best. Since the OP asked I only chime in my choice among the 2.
I'd wait for the Sony A9II, which is coming out this September supposedly.
Or get the A9, which is being discounted right now by a thousand bucks (which is the tip-off that the A9Ii is a reality).
I've never used a Leica. A quick look would have me buy the D7 but I would agree that renting both and seeing how you feel would make the most sense. You are not crazy; invest in what you love
