Hummm, everyone who does not live in California condemns it. Tree Huggers bad, oil users bad. Taxes bad, thumbs up for everyone to make a profit by capitalism, thumbs down for any one, politician or otherwise that might care about something other than themselves. Conservatives good! Liberals bad! Lots of inferred bias here. Good stuff.

As an aside, I put a windmill on top my car and converted it to electric. Top that one!

Will you all stop your bitching. Our price is currently $5.80/gal with the govt working out ways to make it even higher (all currency exchange differences adjusted for and making allowance for your weird sized gallon).
You Americans live in one of the cheapest countries in the world and you still complain.

Do I have your permission to post the topic and your reply to every debate concerning someone's desire for government to intervene in our economy? Please?

Post whatever you like since we all have freedom of speech. However I don't understand your references since I have not advocated YOUR government interfering in YOUR economy and actually couldn't care less how your government runs your economy. I did say how much our (my) petrol costs and mentioned that it was only costing this much until OUR (meaning my) government worked out a way to increase it. Note I am from New Zealand.
Note also that UHH posts go all around the world and so you have to expect receiving posts and comments that you might think have nothing to do with the US because often they don't. But you must also expect some criticism about how your systems work because, as much as I hate the prospect, the whole worlds economy is somewhat dependent on that of the US. Dammit. As soon as the worlds economy moves away from the US dollar standard (and hopefully gold) all the rest of the worlds economies will improve as yours drops back to the position it really should be in.
I can't even legitimately comment about the woeful state your education system is in since ours is no better. But I can posts comparisons if I want to bother. Oh and while on the subject check out the youtube series starting with "Some Americans are ignorant and proud". I have just started watching and have to admit I agree but also how similar it is to my own country.
Respectively ...

What a bunch of young wiper snappers. When I was in high school I paid 16.9 a gallon for ethyl, remember ethyl? I could cruse the strip all night on $2.00. That was in a roadster with a 331 (I think) Chrysler hemi.

In the 60's I could fill up my Camaro with American Super for $3.50 know my Escalade is about $50.00

Pmorin, My figuring has or me to believe that the state's with the atrocious fuel prices is due to the electorate continually electing spend and tax liberals rather than fiscally conservative Reps who might make a try at going the mess! To a lesser degree have the same problem here in MD!

Actually, that you are from NZ was the reason I asked. We have so many folks in our nation that point to the supposed 'brilliance' of government actions in other nations, but they do so with abject ignorance about peripheral issues in those nations.

Thanks though.

In the early 70's a Datsun 280x (my dream car in my youth) ran about $4000, depending on the market, and gas was $0.40 or so per gallon.

Today, $4.00 dollar gas and cars at $40 000 (topped out Escalades, far more) represent inflation more than price gouging, but I like the $1.99 price from last October too.

When I first came to CA as a kid it was a real great place to live. But the last several decades the Progressive Wing of the Democratic Party has controlled the state. They never saw a spending bill they didn't like (as long as it got them votes) and therefore no tax or fee they don't like. I live in one of the fairly rare non-rural districts with a Republican in Congress.
The Democrats tell voters how much they are going to give them for "free" and the voters go "Oh, gimme, gimme, gimme!" because they weren't educated well enough to know better.
The last few years I was teaching High School I did not have a single class that read at grade level on average (about 1/3 of the kids were at or above grade level but some were below 4th grade reading level). They also didn't know how to listen, take notes or study. So they couldn't read the History book and couldn't learn it all from lectures either. I spent up to 1/3 of my class time teaching reading and study skills, how to take notes, vocabulary, map reading etc etc etc to give them a better chance. I also drilled into them that the state Community/Jr College system was a chance to make up for it after they got out in the world and found their education wasn't good enough. If you are 18, even without HS graduation you can take Community College classes and a huge % of them are "High School Makeup" to allow people to catch up and then qualify for a 4 year school or get an AA.
I used to have former students show up on "Open House" nights and tell me they were attending XYZ school and in desperation they tried those "too much work" techniques for study I drilled them in and "You know what? It worked!" and there I thought I was just killing time to avoid teaching history, geography or government.

Oh, I graduated HS in 63. 9th grade in my home town in Kentucky, (the whole county has less than 10,000 people) moved to CA for 10th and 11th grade then back to Kentucky for 12th and almost flunked out of the College Prep courses on the midterms of my first semester back because CA schools had made me so intellectually lazy even though back then CA had a high rating among the states education wise. I hustled, got my grades back up and scored 99th percentile on the UK entrance exam which KY used as a standardized test to compare all the high schools in the state. Every 12th grader in the state took the exam in the 2nd semester. It made it easy to apply to any college in KY since you already took the UK entrance exam.

The following took place after your graduation, and in Texas, but In the 5th grade we were given the CAT's (California Aptitude Tests) which were, apparently designed to place people on a sliding scale of aptitude, ranking them like 6.6, meaning sixth grade, sixth month. As a 5th grader, I missed one solitary question on the multi-sectioned test, receiving a 12.9 rating in all subjects. I KNOW I could never have passed my HS Chemistry, Biology II, Physics, Algebra II, or even my Sr. English Composition classes at that time, so California surely had low standards if a TX 5th grader, according to their testing, was ready to graduate in Ca.
