I must admit, When I got the Nikon P1000 and felt the heft & weight, I wondered if I'd made a blunder ordering a Manfrotto Befree tripod.

But it is pretty solid even with the lens fully extended.

Now I need to learn the basics. The 'Sunny 16 Rule', F. Stops, ISO, Shutter Speed etc.

Are there any good books you chaps could recommend please ?

Paul :)

There are several good books on the subject of photography but not all of them are geared towards beginners and less experienced folks. My favorite photography author is Scott Kelby and he wrote a series called The Digital Photography Book. This 5 book series is easy and fun to read and follow. If you want to learn digital photography I strongly recommend reading, at least, book 1 of the series. You decide whether or not to read the rest, but after reading book 1 you probably will want to read the rest, they're that good.
Bryan Peterson's books are also good but not as easy reading as Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Book series.
BTW, welcome to the forum. My advice to learning digital photography, along with a few good books, is practice, practice, practice. Digital "film" is cheap... Enjoy.

Welcome, Paul! Awesome camera you have there; spend a few hours with it, just going through menus, taking and deleting photos, reading the manual. Get familiar with all it can do so you can use your knowledge of it when you are taking pictures, or imagining what you'd like to shoot.

Hi, I just purchased my first camera, a Nikon P1000 and a Manfrotto Befree tripod.
I have no idea what I'm doing. My interests are mixed. Some wildlife, moon and general photography.
Hopefully I can learn something here.
Paul :)

Welcome
First rule is that the best camera is the one you have in your pocket.
Second learn incrementally in the same way you do when learning to drive. Hone in on a skill, practice it then move onto to a new skill once you feel you have a basic understanding of what is required.
Thirdly; it takes time to progress, the learning curve can seem daunting but practice and stay focussed on your learning objectives especailly in the first year or so.
Most of all enjoy; and if possible take images which tell a story or illicit a smile because this will keep you motivated.
